Ok so this may be a completly silly post but what are the benefits of squalene supplementation? I noticed that its in Jarrows FamilE that I am currently taking however, a bit of a google turns up next to no results. The only thing I could see of interest was a theory that Gulf war syndrome was because of the high squalene content in anthrax vaccines ;)

Whats the deal?

Just an excerpt from wiki:

Recently it has become a trend for sharks to be hunted to process their livers for the purpose of making squalene health capsules. However, there is little clinical evidence to prove that, taken internally, squalene does anything to increase an individual's quality of life.

A study linking squalene, as experimental vaccine adjuvant, to individuals with the clinical signs of Gulf War syndrome was published in 2002. The published findings strongly suggest that the squalene contaminated vaccines could be responsible for the Gulf War Syndrome symptoms seen in the study group, and recommended that a large scale epidemiological study be performed to verify or correct this.[3] Despite repeated assurances that the vaccine was safe and necessary, a U.S. Federal Judge ruled that there was good cause to believe it was harmful, and he ordered the Pentagon to stop administering it in October 2004.[4]

so a bit more info. the link between GWS and squalene is interesting. It could be the high levels of squalene lead to GWS or it could be that some other mechanism is attacking the bodies own source of squalene and thus making an unusually high level of antibodies.

the good about squalene is thus, Jarrows FamilE contains 10mg of squalene according to the label. According to this study, the average american diet contains about 30mg of squalene. So thats three times the amount in FamilE so its not a huge dose. it also goes on about the potential applications.

Squalene is a triterpene that is an intermediate of the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway and it can be obtained from the diet. Olive oil contains 0.2-0.7% squalene. The average intake of squalene is 30 mg/day in the United States, however, when consumption of olive oil is high, the intake of squalene can reach 200-400 mg/day as observed in Mediterranean countries. The decreased risk for various cancers associated with high olive oil consumption may be due to the presence of squalene. Experimental studies have shown that squalene can effectively inhibit chemically-induced colon, lung and skin tumourigenesis in rodents. The protective effect is observed when squalene is given before and/or during carcinogen treatment. The mechanisms involved for the chemopreventive activity of squalene may include inhibition of Ras farnesylation, modulation of carcinogen activation and anti-oxidative activities. However, several factors must be taken into consideration when the evidence for the inhibition of carcinogenesis by squalene is examined, these include the effective dose used and the time of exposure. The information obtained is from animal bioassays and the long-term effects from consuming increased levels of squalene are not known. Although animal studies have enhanced our understanding of the possible action of squalene in decreasing carcinogenesis, one must apply caution in extrapolating the information obtained in animal studies to humans, because of possible species differences. In order to evaluate the overall implications of squalene to human cancer prevention, further studies are needed to fully identify its protective effects, as well as possible detrimental effects.

theres is also these
Amaranth squalene reduces serum and liver lipid levels in rats fed a cholesterol diet.
Squalene, olive oil, and cancer risk. Review and hypothesis.

but then theres that fact that squalene is a cholesterol precursor.
Dietary squalene increases cholesterol synthesis measured with serum non-cholesterol sterols after a single oral dose in humans.

The original interest in shark squalene comes from the observation that sharks live indefinitely and don't seem to die off from age related illnesses like cancer. Therefore people thought there might be some nutrient in sharks that helps protect against aging. I think the lack of information about squalene (besides gulf war syndrome conspiracy theories) about sums up its scientific uses.

I wouldnt say the GWS connection is a conspiracy per se since the high level of squalene antibodies in GWS patients have been properlly measured and reported. But yes it seems like a bit of a filler compound.

GWS is supposedly caused from injecting squalene not from taking it orally.

Your immune system recognizes squalene as an oil molecule native to your body. It is found throughout your nervous system and brain. In fact, you can consume squalene in olive oil and not only will your immune system recognize it, you will also reap the benefits of its antioxidant properties.

The difference between "good" and "bad" squalene is the route by which it enters your body. Injection is an abnormal route of entry which incites your immune system to attack all the squalene in your body, not just the vaccine adjuvant.

Your immune system will attempt to destroy the molecule wherever it finds it, including in places where it occurs naturally, and where it is vital to the health of your nervous system.[viii]

Gulf War veterans with Gulf War Syndrome (GWS) received anthrax vaccines which contained squalene.[ix] MF59 (the Novartis squalene adjuvant) was an unapproved ingredient in experimental anthrax vaccines and has since been linked to the devastating autoimmune diseases suffered by countless Gulf War vets.[x]

Squalene: The Swine Flu Vaccine’s Dirty Little Secret Exposed

Abstract
Sharks have been claimed to be resistant to cancer and oil from their livers have been used in Scandinavian folk medicine as anti-tumor drug. Shark liver oil contains 40% or more of squalene. Fish liver oil is also rich in squalene and polyunsaturated n-3 fatty acids. The aim of this work was to determine the anti-angiogenic and anti-tumor effects of these substances, together with another Scandinavian traditional remedy--arctic birch ashes--in Balb/c mice after transplantation of syngeneic L-1 sarcoma. All substances tested, alone or in combinations, significantly diminished cutaneous angiogenesis induced by tumor cells, and tumor growth.

The squalene in vaccine connection isn't that the vaccine carries too much of it, it's that when you have your immune system response to the vaccine it also recognizes squalene and reclassifies it as harmful and therefor disrupts our natural squalene production and function which causes huge issues.
