I'm trying to choose between AHCC and MGN-3 (which also goes by several other names). AHCC has a longer history of use, more research, and is more widely accepted. In Japan it is a standard adjunctive therapy for cancer and is totally mainstream. MGN-3, according to some research by a single guy (M. Ghoneum), is much more potent than AHCC and its effects on NK activity persist long-term, in contrast to AHCC where NK activity seems to trend back toward baseline over time.

Anyone have any input?

I did a thread a while back trying to compare some different compounds/products in this area a while back including AHCC and Epicor. It did become a discussion on low dose naltrexelone (sp?). http://www.imminst.o...showtopic=21527

One site listed this statement: The original MGN-3 ... From Lane Labs
IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE
due to FDA Ruling July 9th, 2004
(due to medicinal claims by the manufacturer, not because it didn't work!)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We now have three substitutes that we recommend to our customers, PeakImmune4, AHCC and Noxylane4. All three are rice bran/mushroom extract products. PeakImmune4 is manufactured in Japan by Daiwa Pharmaceuticals, the same company which made the original MGN-3. AHCC is a less expensive mushroom extract, and in our experience not as potent per milligram, but is actually more popular in Japan than the other products. (To Read About AHCC, Click HERE) Noxylane4 is Lane Labs' new product designed to replace MGN3. We sell all three due to popular demand, but have more reorders for the MGN-3 successors (now PeakImmune4).

This was one link on epicor if you haven't heard of it. Some places say it surpasses AHCC to and some pretty large claims are made about it. http://www.naturodoc...ncer/epicor.htm

Source Naturals has the product (RBAC) that you're curious about. http://www.vitacost....als-NK-3-Immune

iherb has the best price I've found for the MGN-3/RBAC, its by Now Foods and costs $60 for 60 500mg capsules. There's something about Lane Labs that feels shady and fly-by-night, and their Noxylane4 product is apparently just MGN-3 with some kind of algae added that they claim enhances bioavailability. I'm not sold on it.

Right now I'm taking 1500mg of EpiCor, 1500mg of astragalus extract and 1500mg AHCC daily, and am considering replacing the AHCC with MGN-3 (this is for Lyme Disease with a resulting low CD-57 count of only 37). This is in addition to 400mg of doxycycline that was prescribed by a Lyme specialist and all the rest of my usual regimen.

That is an expensive stack. How long have you been on it and what effects or lack of symptoms have you noticed since? What do you think of the science behind Epicor? Is its reputation as solid as AHCC?

I did find this NOW document that explains AHCC, MGN, Broccology, and their glyconutrient complex.

I don't think epicor has much science at all behind it -- I bought it basically on a whim. It does have a ton of positive anecdotal reports, including people with Lyme which was persuasive for me. I'm guessing that whatever benefit it provides is a result of its beta-glucan content.

I just started this stack a couple of days ago and I also started on antibiotics last week so it will be impossible to tease apart their individual effects. I've had much less muscle twitching and no chest pain, and both had been bothering me quite a bit, so something is helping.

These immune supplements are expensive, but I'm so excited to finally have a concrete explanation for various issues that have been bothering me for years, I can't help but throw the kitchen sink at it.

Something to keep in mind is that some people have trouble with Lyme toxins. To see if you're one of them you can do visual contrast sensitivity (See information in this thread.) and/or a HLA DRB/DQB test (Labcorp (only) code #012542). The HLA test costs $430 and my insurance covered it. (I took it for mold, but it turns out that my symptoms are neither allergy nor poison related. It looks like it's purely neurological, from sensitized vanilloid receptors or enhanced response to vanilloid receptor stimulation.)

To deal with poisons, Shoemaker likes cholestyramine and ARG likes chitosan nanoparticules.

Funk, any more information you've come across or direct comparison data?

Don't be confused. All these proprietary alphabet supplements are merely a glorified low quality amount of glucan compounds.

They all work because of the glucan polysaccharide that attaches to the complement on the cell membrane of neutrophils and other WBCs. You're better off with Transfer Point or Biothera Beta 1->3-D,1->6 glucan.

This is analogous to buying "Grape Seed Extract 95% Activin" versus "Procyanidin B2" if you want that specific dimer.

Hi FunkOdyssey, Did you have any negative impact from taking AHCC?  I am trying to see if it's ok to take for Lyme... hard to find info on it.  I did come across a few sites that said it's not advised or should be used with caution in people with autoimmune diseases (I think Lyme falls in that category).

Please let me know what your experience was. Thanks - Justin
