Has anyone ever tried supplementing L-Glutamic Acid, L-Glutamine and B6 to enhance GABA synthesis in the body to hopefully help GABA cross the BBB?

It is known that supplementing straight GABA does little to boost GABA in the brain due to the BBB but does anyone think supplementing these three things in unison would stimulate GABA in the brain (as GABA is synthesized naturally in the body from these three compounds)?

Let me know thoughts or if you've tried it and your results and supplement dosages.

I take L-Glutamine and vitamin B-6 everyday. Not specifically to synthesize GABA but for myriad other health benefits.

Though theoretically glutamine is made into GABA, for some reason glutamine can also turn into glutamic acid and turn into an neuroexcitatory stimulant. Many people can take glutamine at 4-5g/day but for me, i took 300mg of it and got really bad anxiety from it. Which doent quite make sense since my amino acids test showed glutamine to be real low. But my other amino acids were low as well and amino acids compete in the body and an imbalance can cause some mental havoc. Glutamine in my case did not turn into GABA but quite the reverse happened. But different for everyone else.
GABA supplementation directly can work but i dont know about dependency issues.

i've heard that beta-alanine increased brain GABA levels.

Firstly, glutamine is a precursor for both GABA (the inhibitory neurotransmitter) and glutamate (the excitatory neurotransmitter).

Secondly, the easiest way to get GABA into the brain is by taking to picamilon. Picamilon is simply GABA bound to Vitamin B3. This way it gets into the brain. I can tell you from personal experience that it works wonders. But I don't use it. Why? Because it's like taking benzodiazepines. If you flood your brain with extra GABA, your receptors will become less sensitive to it/your glutamate levels will increase in response. Whatever the precise mechanisms, you'll find yourself needing more and more of the stuff just to stay at the same level of anxiety.

Key is to increase glutamic acid decarboxylase activity (glutamate -> GABA).

Gotu Kola is good for this: http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/18066140
