I have a hunch that a lot of mood disorders are related to undiagnosed Hypoglycemia and Diabetes. When you're blood sugar isn't stable you're moods aren't stable. You're brain needs a constant steady supply of glucose to run the right way. I've been experiencing problems with Concentrating, Extreme Fatigue/Lethargy, Depression, and Memory problems for way too long. I just recently decided to supplement with GTF Chromium, (not chromium piccolinate, because of the possibility of developing kidney complication while using it) and all my symptoms were gone within an hour of taking 200 MCG. I figured out I have undiagnosed Hypoglycemia.
Chromium balances blood sugar, and its been proven in tons of lab tests, see for yourself and google "Chromium". Our diets today are high in processed foods and what do processed foods do? They inhibit our digestive systems from properly absorbing minerals!!

Most definitely a supplement to look into for those who suffer with the symptoms I had mentioned above!!

Have a good night.

And what about the other effects of chromium that deal with such things as fat metabolism? Placebo also?

I'm not sure, I wasn't taking it long enough to notice anything regarding weight loss. Seems like it didn't do much here:

That was using it in the form of picolinate, not GTF, which many believe to be superior to picolinate.

I believe your original hypothesis.  You can read more about that here actually:

I remember dealing with anxiety and feeling nervous, and taking alpha lipoic acid, and it was like a miracle.  Maybe that's something you should try in conjunction with chromium.

Chromium actually works for a percentage of people having atypical depression(a common subtype of depression). Dr. Malcolm McLeod discovered this accidentally while treating one of his patients. After his discovery it has been tested in a few studies.
The form of chromium used in the studies was chromium picolinate.

A proper diet would give you all the chromium you need. As with any over used vitamin/mineral, too much in your body is not a good thing. Eat healthy food on a regular basis, keeping blood sugar levels stable.
People on these boards are obsessed with supplements. They'll be one for breathing oxygen next

Which foods? I don't eat a lot of broccoli because it's fart-a-delic.

Funny, chromium at high enough doses tends to make me irritable.
