Message from the Chairman:

In , I explained that there weren't any big news then but that major changes were being worked on behind the scenes.
Well, this month some of those changes are now immediately obvious to visitors to the forums. The re-design of this part of the website is
only a first step in a process of re-invention and re-configuration. To be fair, the
technical changes may be the most
obvious, but they are the least important. Important at ImmInst is to
empower our Members to better pursue our common mission. Hopefully, the
new forum features will help, but we also need to make sure that there
are the right people in place. And as far as members are concerned -
have you checked your membership is in order? And
have you considered joining the ranks of our wonderful
volunteers
? If you have a little bit more time to spare, we are
urgently looking for responsible Lead Officers to
spearhead some ImmInst work, especially now that one
Director has stepped down
.

Getting the right people and better tools allows us to move forward with
the mission. For example by funding scientific
research
into aging and life extension. Those are the projects that,
enabled by the better tools and carried by determined dreamers will
change, not just ImmInst but the eventually world.

And, in another reference to the last newsletter - yes, as you can see, we are sticking
with the '8th day' for now. Some things don't change that quickly.

Forum Re-Design

We hope you like the new design of the ImmInst Forums. After just a few days
of downtime, the main changes were successfully implemented. However, the
initiative is not finished. Please bear with us over the next few weeks
while new features are being trialled and minor and major tweaks to the
layout are underway. Given this ongoing construction, it is a bit difficult
to keep track of all the new features, but here are a few:

  • A sidebar with up-to date forum information

  • Mobile phone interface

  • You can now log in to ImmInst with your facebook username,

  • Integrate forum with social network alerts

  • Improved search

  • A better system for identifying unread posts

  • Private user-to-user conversations, now with groups.

  • A chatbox

  • An option to view only posts that weren't considered 'low quality'

  • by others

  • Full member profiles, including commenting, status & friends

  • Multi-quote and topic preview

  • Users can "watch" (subscribe to) interesting content  with more

  • options

  • An interactive 'library for links'

  • A Members map

Call for Lead Officers

The Immortality Institute is a grass roots, member-based organisation.
Whereas a large volunteer taskforce is key, we have come to realise that we
cannot rely entirely on unpaid activists. People have to eat, some
commitments need to be formalised and compensated.

But trying to pay people for their good work has its particular
difficulties:

Firstly, money is tight, especially at a tiny organization such as ImmInst.
If there are never enough funds to pay for the scientific research that we
know is crucial, or for vital policy and public information work, how can we
justify redirecting sparse funds into salaries?

Moreover, working for life extension and getting paid for it is truly a
‘dream job’ for all of us – what happens to social dynamics if some
volunteers are getting paid while others are still expected to work ‘for
free’? Who decides what level of compensation is adequate and whether or not
anyone’s performance is and remains up to scratch? -- Those issues are
challenging, but they cannot be intractable if we want to move forward.

We have identified the following lead officer roles, where the workload is
such that a small monetary compensation for time invested is appropriate:

  • Membership Secretary

  • Lead Engineer

  • Team and Project Coordinator

  • Lead Editor

  • Lead Moderator

David Styles changes roles

David Styles has decided to step down from his position as ImmInst Director
to be able to focus more on organising the 2010 ImmInst conference and on
other objectives. We thank David for his services as a Director and look
forward to the conference to be held on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of
October at the International Auditorium, in Brussels, Belgium. A number of
first-class speakers have already confirmed attendance - watch out for an
invite quite soon.

Have you checked you
membership?

Part of the reason why we needed to focus on changing the forums software
was that the old system was... well broken. People who joined as Members
since February may not have seen their registration status upgrade as
expected. Some other Members do not currently have their membership
supported by a members donation and therefore should have been expelled but
were not. We are currently trying to sort these records out. If you think
anything is remiss with your status, please let us know ASAP!

Science Funding

In response to the ImmInst Science call 5 expressions of interest were
received, 2 were shortlisted and reviewed. Perhaps surprisingly, there were
no completely unsubstantial submissions. The 3 projects that didn't make it
further were not a great fit for this scheme, or not developed enough. We
hope to be contacting the proposers soon and explore ways in which these
ideas could still come to fruition.

Of the two shortlisted projects, one is smaller, more basic-research oriented using nematodes.

The second is larger, more therapy-oriented using mice.

Our current plan is to be bold and try to fund both!

We plan to start with the former project very soon and if all goes well, begin fund-raising for the second project in early Autum. As these will be matched fundraisers, we will be seeking the Membership endorsement for this course of action - this unfortunately means a slight delay at the moment, as we are still working to re-establish accurate membership records after the software failure earlier this year.

ImmInst.Org
٭  Newsletter

August 2010

Message from the Chairman:

The 8th month of the year. Holiday time in many parts, but
certainly not at ImmInst. The forum redesign is slowly bedding in, but
still there are new features and design elements trialled on an almost
daily basis. While this work is underway, we are busy

planning ahead for the Autumn: the
Science
Fundraisers
and most notably our annual conference
require a lot of work
and attention.

Other initiatives are furiously being worked at behind
the scenes: I was hoping to announce here the availability of the
ImmInst community supplement, and of an new members benefit, also in the
supplements area. Also in preparation is a referendum to finalise the
constitutional changes that we have been working to implement for a
while. These aren't quite ready yet - members should keep an eye
out on the internal forums, where these items will be brought back to
the table very soon.

To speed these and many other things up, we could *really* use some help. The
editors team is regrouping and it would be great if other
teams or initiatives could be similarly invigorated. Why not check out
the projects forum and see if you could join in?

Conference registrations now
OPEN

The 2010 ImmInst conference has opened its doors for
registration: Whereas previously, European members met in conjunction with
the SENS conferences, this will be the first 'ImmInst' event in Europe.

Confirmed speakers include Michael Rose, Aubrey de Grey,
Stephen Spindler, Leonid Gavrilov, Steven Coles,  Paul McGlothin,
Stephen Spindler, Bart Braeckman.

The event will cover all bases - there will be a strong
scientific emphasis on aging and regeneration research, but also a public
debate, a consideration of cryonics arrangements in Europe, a brainstorming
session about ImmInst objectives and activities and ample opportunity to
network and socialise.

Places are limited to 200, so make sure you register
early.

Members can pick up their special discount code here:

Science Funding

ImmInst Members are currently voting on a referendum to confirm the
science project funding strategy for 2010. We are aiming to launch at least
two matching fundraisers for small but effective and research projects.
Voting will close only a few days after this newsletter is send, so make
sure you get your vote in NOW (members only):

http://www.imminst.org/forum/topic/42774-imminst-science-funding-2010/

If the strategy is confirmed, we will begin fundraising for the first
selected project immediately. Make sure you revisit the site later this
month if you want to contribute to cutting-edge aging research.

Forum Re-Design

The updates and improvements to the forum software continue. Some of the
recent changes were 'under the hood' some are more obvious:

  • A videos system to share multimedia content

  • A gallery page to showcase both private photos and useful graphics

  • Improved science alerts for keywords and job adverts

  • More RSS feeds directly into relevant forum sections

  • Better navigability to non-forum pages through sidebars

We are also experimenting with a variant of the reputation system where
users receive 'T' 'time' or 'thank you' points from others or for certain
activities. There is great potential for this system to evolve into a gentle
'incentive economy' to reward high quality contributions.

I understand people that aren't registered don't have the option of voting for the referendum but if possible you should post another topic displaying all the things being voted on. Unless you did post a link and I'm missing it?

Also, are there any plans in place for a redesign of the front page?

ImmInst.Org
٭  Newsletter

December 2010

Message from the Chairman:

This is the final ImmInst Newsletter. Why? Are we closing down? Are we giving up?

Well, we knew early on that 2010 would be a year of change – because our collective ‘Mind’ and executive Director was stepping down in early spring. We also knew that we couldn’t just replace him – the job of managing had become too much work to pile on any one persons shoulders. So we went about restructuring and distributing responsibilities. Ratified by last months Referendum, this work is now almost complete.

But we didn’t leave it at that.

These are just some of the accomplishments during 2010:

-- a major overhaul of the ImmInst forum software, implementing lots of new features and functionality including a mobile phone interface, integration with social networks, improved navigation and notification options, an interactive library for documents, videos, links, and pictures etc..

-- a new membership management system, new tools for moderation and reputation, and a revolutionary new system to recognize volunteer contributions

-- managing an ever changing roster of leaders, members, volunteers and contacts, gathering further support but  also reigning in those quirky and nefarious presences that sometimes emerge

-- a new user agreement, new bylaws and a new constitution clarifying roles and responsibilities of members and leadership and implementing a new structure of governance.

-- the first major ImmInst conference in Europe bringing together members and
international experts

-- community initiatives like the creative writing contest, a volunteer prize draw and an (still unclaimed!) ‘Elders Advice’ Video Challenge prize;

-- In collaboration with RevGenetics we have pioneered a community-designed multivitamin supplement, with an amazing discount to Members: http://www.imminst.org/vimmortal

-- We have held on to and extended other members benefits: from a discount on the Rejuvenation Research magazine, to a discount to conferences. And now we are announcing a great new supplement benefit scheme with the support of Stop Aging Now.

-- two major fundraisers for anti-aging science projects: the first one in the summer on mitochondrial uncoupling, which was a great success. A
further major fundraiser on microglia stem cells
is currently underway.

So all in all, I reckon
we can be very proud of what we achieved this year. Why then the final
ImmInst newsletter? Because, from next year on, this will be the
LongeCity newsletter!

With this new flag to fly, with a new governance structure for greater
effectiveness and accountability, with a buzzing community for
inspiration and support, I’m sure the Immortality Institute will make an
impact towards the conquest of involuntary death in 2011 and beyond.

Please consider a donation to
our grass roots research fund!

Sure, this is the time of the year when everyone asks you donate to
something. But if you want to make a real impact to anti-aging research,
examining both causes of aging and a potential, practical cure, and led by
committed life extensionists who will discuss their research and report back
to the community every step of the way - PLEASE consider donating to the Microglia Stem Cell Research
project and make a difference in the fight against the ravages of brain aging this season!

LongeCity - a new
name for ImmInst?

From the date of the next newsletter, the main profile of
our site will be branded 'LongeCity'.  However, the 'Immortality
Institute' is not gone, it is still a legitimate name for our organisation
and will continue to be be found in many places. Why are we doing this? In a
nutshell: because our mission, to conquer the blight of involuntary death is
too important to be held back by a name. But this is a long-running, complex
and sometimes controversial discussion. Check the announcement below and the
references therein for more background.

LongeCity Newsletter

February  2011

Message from the Chairman:

In
the last newsletter, we warned that there may be some disruption to the
website in January. Little did we foresee how that would play out!

So
here we are, off to a new domain and some still unsure how to pronounce
'Longecity'. And that is not the only challenge- efforts are underway
to shape the LongeCity 'brand' as a partner to the Immortality
Institute. If you look around the forums, you will find various topics
for brainstorming ideas.  As these ideas are considered and
trialled,
things may look unsightly for a while -- LongeCity is not a
slick marketing operation and it will take some time to get it 'right'
with community support and feedback to guide us.

Community feedback will
also be useful as we draw up our budget for 2011 to fund efforts like
the research fundraiser.

This is only possible of course with the help
of new sponsors and Members.
Thanks for your continued support!

Website under construction?

The scheduled January maintenance went smoothly at first: we upgraded the forum software,
with the help of our two new engineers Rwac and AgeVivo.  A few things
broke as they always do on these occasions, but in general we seemed to be
doing fine. Then we hit a problem: could we convert to longecity.org as
scheduled without disrupting links and search engine connections? We
received conflicting advice on this, so after many days  of pondering,
those plans were shelved for the time being... or so we thought. Suddenly,
at the end of January, things began to play up: strange messages appeared
and then a script that tried to lure visitors away to an infested site!
We tackled the problem within minutes and took the site down. When after
some days we thought we had isolated the problem and re-opened, some issues
reappeared.

We had to take the site down again, and this time, since things really
couldn't get any more aggravating, we decided to press on with the domain
switch: So here we are, the forum part of our site is now based on
longecity.org. This got rid of the malware, but we are still not entirely
sure about the technical implications. Advice: Feel free to post in the
forums, those contributions will be saved and transferred whatever happens,
but don't update your bookmarks jut yet.

In almost 10years of running a very open-access web platform, ImmInst has
been victim to spam, denial of service and other attacks, but avoided being
used as a distributors of malicious software. We are committed to
re-establishing that track record, and decisions will need to be made about
trade offs between efficacy, usability, richness of features and safety. The
internet is not a 'safe place' - but we will at least make sure that if
LongeCity and the Immortality Institute is known for being dangerous, its is
only because of the open exchange of 'dangerous ideas' challenging received
opinions.

Sorry to tell you, but your brain is aging! While genetic dispositions differ, if you
don't die of other causes, neurodegeneration will eat away your intelligence
and personally eventually, and we know now that the process is likely
already underway. This was shown, years ago, not least by the team we are
trying to support with the still ongoing Microglia Stem Cells project!

Now this team is proposing to not just observe, but do something about brain aging, and we will
keep at it until we finally find all the money to make this happen. Many
thanks to all those who have already donated. These contributors demonstrate
that its not just about intellectual discussions as they occur on the
forums, but about being intelligent enough to identify clever projects that
are not funded by the mainstream -- and about defeating the ravages of brain
aging that have extinguished too many wonderful minds. Please consider being
just as smart, before it is too late.

Finance update

In January, the Board has traditionally reviewed the
Treasurers financial report from the preceding year.  Because of the
technical disruptions, we did not have time to fully discuss these reports,
but we can at least say: despite the difficult economic circumstances
LongeCity is financially stable.

Thanks to all Members, donors and sponsor
for standing up to be counted! The new constitution asks the board to
present a formal spending plan for the year in March.  Those
discussions will begin very soon. Make sure you renew your membership if you
want to keep an eye on them!

Green? or blue? Artist or
Editor?

Why is this newsletter styled green? Why are the forums? Initially, this was
just as an orientation aid between the 'old' and the new url, but we kept
them to hint at the possibility of change. This is not to say that we won't
be blue again, or that much more drastic changes are not a real possibility.
If you want to have a say in these processes, you should join one of two
teams: the ' Team' manages content on the site, the ' Team' deals in graphics and designs. Anyone, whether Member or not can
join these teams, get stuck in improving the site and ear 'Thank You points
in the process' .

Forums

VOLUNTEERS

With the 'Thank You' or '₮' points-based system now up and running, volunteers and valued forum contributors receive these points based on their
contributions, and can redeem these
points at a ' store' for fun items -- such a your own personal emoticon, or some small
prizes or -- including free membership, Amazon gift vouchers, or even seed
capital to start your own matching fundraiser.

This newsletter was send by email like every month.

This newsletter was also send out by PM - as we have all realized now, that didn't work well with html, sorry.

For many users, the PM is then send on via email- so if you are not looking too closely, you may think that we send you an email, but that is not the case. The response makes me think that many people got the PM, but not the regular email.

Here is why: If you WANT to receive the newsletter vial email, you need to make sure that on this page 'Send me any updates sent by the board administrator' is ticked! It will then arrive in a legible form.

The newsletter looks good to me. Just a few minor spacing and typo issues. Content and form looks good. In the future, with more active teams, the ability to include more big initiatives should help a lot, things to grab attention. Come to think of it, for example, a picture of the billboard might have grabbed more readers last month.

I feel that I should point out that a link in the yellow box at the bottom of the newsletter reads "logecity" instead of Longecity. Still links to the correct place, just with a spelling error. :)
