This pisses me off. They want to effectively paywall PubMed.

Thanks for nothing Obama! ... Obama lets the incestuous government gravy train keep rolling.

Never pass up a chance to blame Obama... How do you think things would have worked out in a Business Friendly™ Romney Administration? Maybe it would have been five years instead of one. It was our Republican friends who introduced the twisted bill that started this thread. Maybe the one year deal was an attempt at "bipartisanship"?

We do agree that the profit-skimming, largely useless scientific publishing empires like Elsevier need to be eliminated. They may have been necessary at one time, but now they are just a cancer that needs to be cut out.

Both major parties are bought and paid for already by corporations, so you shouldn't get hung up on which puppet oppresses you more - that's just a distraction, neither party represents the people.

Back on topic, on the positive side, the blue puppet has done something to save lives for once, instead of dropping bombs on people and taking them:

There's a 12 month delay for public access, but that's not too bad a result.

So this happened! FREE PAPERS!!

Sci-Hub
– the first pirate website in the world to provide mass and public access to tens of millions of research papers.

A research paper is a special publication written by scientists to be read by other researchers. Papers are primary sources neccessary for research – for example, they contain detailed description of new results and experiments.

Public distribution of research papers is artificially restrained by copyright laws. To confront this, the Sci-Hub service, starting from 5 September 2011, opens any paper for free reading, effectively bypassing any restrictions or paywalls.

By this time we have collected more than 47 million research papers on our library, and it's growing. Articles are free to read for any visitor.

Our mission is to remove any barrier which is impeding the widest possible distribution of knowledge in human society!
