Hello

I have a kind catch 22 situation

I currently weigh around 18 stone, I suffer form a damaged tendon in my ankle that the doctors want to operate on, but from my research it seems that the op has a low success rate and can cause further damage.

I am postive that the excess weight I carry is doing no good at all

Now, for a few months now I have been eating well, fresh veggies, good oils, nuts and not in huge amounts. I find that eating well isnt helping lose lots of weight, infact i kind stabilise.

I have tried to alternate calory consumption from 1500 to 2500 with occasional 3000 when plataue

The problem Is I do lose weight when I can go to the gym and do cardio, but this now causes strain on my tendon for a few days and Im worried that doing it too much may put me on my back (has happended before and on crutches for 6 weeks)

I am thinking I would like to try a very low cal diet. < 1000 cals per day, but what vitamins, minerals would I need to maintane correct function of my body while not taking of foods

I am thinking a loss of around 28lbs would see me right for taking on real foods again and be able to do my cardio

Im looking for any constructive advice please

If your are on 1500 calories per day and are eating mostly vegetables, good fat, and protein (VERY FEW CARBS!), you should be able to lose some weight fairly easily. Be certain that you are counting ALL of your calories accurately. Don't forget to count possible calories from what you drink.

You can do weight training that does not strain your ankle. The extra muscle will burn energy all the time and help you lose bodyfat. You should judge you progress with the measuring tape, not the scale (muscle is heavier than fat).

Platypus My knee is also affected by my ankle. I did start doing compound lifts on large muscle groups, I guess I could atart again and go lighter on my affected leg

Try a juice fast or half fast.

set a calorie amount you want to stick to, then use cronometer to include foods that meet RDAs within that calorie level.
Try to get the max of fat from mono, 3:1 omega 3 to 6 ratio. Low GI carbs, high fibre, minimal starches, and cholesterol and transfats as low as poss. Proteins 1.5-2g per lean muscle mass. Keep sat fats as MCTs (i.e. coconut).
Supplement D3, K2 and any other vits/minerals you are unable to meet RDA's for (i.e. zinc, potassium).

I'm not sure this will work well in the long term. It sounds like yo yo dieting- losing weight with a special diet only to go back to the diet that keeps you heavy, so you just gain the weight back. I think you'd have better luck modifying your diet in the direction of one that you can stick with permanently and will result in a lower weight. You need to analyze your current diet, and figure out how much is carb, protein, and fat. In particular, how much is sugar and high glycemic index carbohydrates? That's what you want to get rid of in a healthy diet. How much wheat do you eat? Dropping it or cutting way back on it, if you're eating a lot of it, would probably do the job for you.
