It's really sad that this forum has drifted so far away from focusing on supplements that might actually contribute to overall health.  There are more constructive and informative forums regarding supplements and health/longevity on sites that do not have life extension as their primary focus.

I don't visit the supplements forum as much as I used to because of this.  I admit, I should be visiting other forums here more than I do.  I really haven't visited any other forums here at all lately.

Anyway, just wanted to put my thoughts out there.  What do you guys think?

There are plenty of low-quality discussions. No doubt. I hardly participate in the supplement and nootropics discussion because the relevance to life extension and actual rejuvenation is minimal.

Would you care to point out a forum or a discussion you consider to be of higher quality?

Yet we do get an occasional gem like this: http://www.longecity...post__p__509892.  But come to think of it, this is actually a repost from another forum.

This is the best forum for discussing supplements that I have found. Where's a better one?

I think we really haven't had very many exciting new supplements. That would explain some of it.

I noticed some time ago that the quality of discussions have been on the decline. But I primarily chalk that up to several key members not being about so much.

As for specific discussions regarding longevity or life extension, I think I agree with Rwac. There simply aren't any supplements out there shown to increase lifespan. There are very few that even show health benefits long-term (using proper studies). Once the resveratrol hype died down (at least somewhat), there hasn't really been any major supplements to even talk about.

A few months ago there were a lot more high quality participants.  I think that the internal and external indexing has gotten a lot worse. That's a shame.  That means that people cannot find the info they want to we are missing many participants.

I totally get it, but, what about supplements that might contribute to healthspan???   Hey, I know I have not been contributing, so I'm guilty.  I do appreciate threads about milk thistle and fish oil.  I realize there are only so many supplements out there that might have worth health contributions to talk about.  Plus, all of them have already been covered prevously.

I've been thinking about aspects of this recently. I'm not an expert, not remotely, my role here is limited to asking what I hope are intelligent questions. I have been finding that where there is a discussion that might be useful, such as on the best cooking oil, there are so many assumptions and so much presumption of technical knowledge that I often miss the point. In topics specifically related to longevity, such as Astragalus, there seems to be no activity recently; we're all waiting for Anthony to come forward with his latest product, or for some unknown research group to come out with results on astragalus trials in larger mammals. A summary of the information that was accessible to interested non specialist might be useful, but would anyone with the skills and knowledge have the time or interest to produce it?

Fuck longevity, I just want to look as young as I can.

Could you please be more specific on what it is that you want from the supplements forum?

There's no incentive to post quality information on a forum, if you are not advertising anything. All forums are wastelands these days. Facebook is so popular. Forums are a little bit passe.

Facebook is a cesspool of unwanted garbage these days. I could care less how many time someone reposts a : "If you agree with this you will repost it" bunch of nonsense. :)

So, could someone guide me?

Recently I made a post regarding "supplements that can reverse atherosclerotic plaque on heart and brain veins".

Is this a "non-longevity" post?

Is this not related to longevity?

Remember, I am only making a question.

If not related to longevity, wouldn´t be better to have a criteria to make posts related to longevity?

Anything that is related to health is related to longevity, imo. :)

This.

Just search the past threads and it has probably already been discussed and debated multiple times. If a new article was published about a supplement that increased longevity, it would surely show up here.

What's curious about this forum is that I posted a genuine life extension related article (Buckyballs almost double mouse lifespan) several hours ago, and no one has even looked at it, yet people have commented in this thread complaining that there are not enough life extension related postings.

So my buckyballs thread was merged with one in brain health.

I think that merging threads between forums is a bad idea because it assures that the thread will quickly be buried and forgotten on one of the forums.

Each forum has a different focus - the main thrust of the article was that there was a life extension effect, not a brain health effect.

It is a difficult question regarding the merging of threads from different forum categories. I err on the side of merging them together to keep all insights and questions in one place, but I can see your point as well.

Sometimes there are 4 or 5 threads about the same research and the comments/insights get splintered, so I tend to merge them when I see them.

I agree that Mark's Daily Apple and Mind & Muscle are good quality sites. In some cases, more strictly moderated, while Longecity allows more free flowing conversation.

One thing to remember is that we have a clear goal and mission at Longecity. It was somewhat of an accident of history that we ended up with such prolific supplements and nootropic forums. That was not the idea from the beginning, but we have a strong free speech ethic here and allow people to discuss what they want to discuss. When I interviewed Mark Sisson recently, he did not have much of an opinion on radical life extension - Longecity does. Mind & Muscle is great if you want to experiment with muscle building supplements and brain stimulants, but not if you are serious about rejuvenation technology.

The best thing that Longecity does is raise money for research, the supplement and noos discussions are secondary. The supps forums have been better and worse quality through the years and are very popular, but it is not the mission of this non-profit. I would trade 10,000 supplement and noos posters for 100 serious researchers in these forums any day. Many former "high quality" posters have said all they need to say, have developed healthy regimens and have moved on to more important things like curing the disease of aging. In my most recent podcast with Justin Rebo, he says about the same thing. He says we need more people doing the actual research, the hard work to cure aging, not more people popping pills.

Look as young as you can? I'd first suggest forgetting about tanning as you mentioned on another thread.

The popping pills thing is a big business, and people are interested in it. True longevity technology does not even exist yet. :)
