If we hit 150 signatures in the petition advocating indefinite life extension at the link below, the petition will be launched into more visible pages in the White House website. With 25,000 signatures, the President will weigh in and give a response. However many signatures this gets will help bring awareness to the cause.

Tom Mooney started this and sent out word on it through email:

Dear Friends and Members of C.E.L., As you know we were very successful with our petition on "Petition.org".We won easily and more people now know that a viable social and political movement for life extension is alive ,functioning and growing. We need to continue being visible.Iam convinced that the more people are made aware that life extension is not merely wishful thinking but has a sound scientific basis that within a reasonable period of time will develop successful treatments for the terminal condition we refer to as aging the stronger our movement grows.I am convinced that our biggest enemy is ignorance. We receive little publicity and the little we do receive is often negative. In other words,we need more viability and recognition as a scientific, social and political movement!

The petition that we had on "Science Debate.org"was a step in the right direction but so much more needs to be done.I received some positive feedback from the petition and I want to keep people thinking about this issue and, hopefully, make it a topic of conversation in relevant legislative bodies around the country. We need to continue educating people and maintaining a viable presence in the political system at every level in order to build strong support for life extension research and other relevant considerations.

We can and must prevail! Our lives depend on it!We should take advantage of any opportunity available to us and use it to promote life extension as a national priority that should be adequately funded. For example, the budget of the National Institutes of Health should contain a line item called "Life Extension Research"that will fund viable and promising research into developing treatments that will guarantee that the first unalienable right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, namely,"Life",will become a reality not a mere slogan.

Recently, the White House set up a web site upon which citizens can vote for issues they believe are important and should be pursued. It is somewhat similiar to the "Science Debate.org"petition but any topic can be placed on the White House website not just scientific matters.

I saw this as another opportunity to promote life extension research and I placed a petition urging that Federal funding for life extension research be available in the same way that other life-taking conditions are funded. As I mentioned previously"life"is the first unalienable right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence.

Any petitions that receive 25000 votes within 30 days will receive a reply delineating the President's position on the issue involved, and for the petition to be promulgated on the main screen 150 votes are needed. I am asking everyone who receives this correspondence to help out as much as possible. Please talk to your friends, relatives, associates or anyone who may be interested in signing the petition.

I am aware that obtaining 25,000 votes by July 20 is difficult but not impossible.Let's give it a try.First we need 150 votes to be placed on the main screen and then 24,850 in order to receive a reply from the President. We all know a lot of people and I truly hope you can help out on this matter.Once the petition is placed on the screen many other people will read it and sign it.

We easily won the previous "Science Debate"poll and I believe that 25,000 votes is possible. Please talk to anyone you know ask them to sign it!Polls are important to our cause.Few politicians are willing to touch this issue because it is not on the current political agenda. We must fight the argument that life extension is a "fringe"issue. We have an opportunity to show that a large number of people care about this issue. We will build a little credibility as well among those in office who generally can tell when an issue is gaining strength.

In order to sign the petition the URL is; "http:wh.gov/lqpW ".If you have any difficulties, questions, evaluations, etc.feel free to contact me anytime at"director@Coalitiontoextendlife.org or feel free to call me at 2024454876.

I sincerely hope that you will participate in this process,I sincerely believe that it is a step in the right direction, politically speaking,it will help our name recognition and it will give us a credibility boost in a political sense.

PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME AT ANY TIME!!!! IN LIFE NOW AND FOREVER TOM MOONEY Executive Director C.E.L.

The vote is open for residents of all countries. It now has almost 200 votes and the majority of voters have been from Russia and Europe. It is in fact very surprising to see how few voters from the US there are!

By the way, just in case here is another link to the petition

And by another way, here is the Science Debate petition (referred to in the letter) where we won by a very large margin.

I have signed the online petition, and forwarded the information with the link to a number of people, but only one or two others also signed onto it from my group of folks. My question for Longecity is, why isn't this being signed by every member? Why isn't this being promoted by Longecity as one no-cost action that everyone can take just a few minutes of their time to do?

The old Imminst home page would highlight several main topics, such as the Folding at Home distributed computing program, another action that everyone can participate in. This home page format has apparently disappeared. The Longecity web site is diverse, but almost to the point of being unwieldy. I receive emails sent, with random topics addressed in each email, but there is little or no sense of shared priority for taking action, other than, of course, in principle, supporting the general goal of life extension and indefinite life span.

I would urge Longecity to prioritize the White House petition, as a means of taking the first steps to create the political will necessary to drive the life extension issue to the forefront of people's consciousness.. But I fear that this post will be lost in the sea of other blogs, forums, posts, threads, etc., and one of the best opportunities that has actually been initiated by someone through Longecity, will dissipate and be forgotten soon. Please prove me wrong.

Well, this petition's deadline is tomorrow, and we hardly got over 370 votes (out of 25,000 votes needed for reply). Tells quite a lot about the general readiness of life-extensionists to do something for the cause.

Still, I believe this effort was not in vain and taught us a good deal. Additional petitions can (and will) be launched via this and other mechanisms.
