Pure turmeric doesn't seem abrasive. It is a ground root spice, like ginger. Its texture is similar to ground cinnamon. When taken orally turmeric can dissolve fatty and waxy substances in your body, like cholesterol or congestion causing deafness. If you have the wrong constitution it might attack the myelin sheaths of your nerves or other essential tissues (again, if taken orally). Not sure how it works here.

are you sure it could cross the bbb? i mean it is made of lipids but still.

also, according to wikipedia, curcumin is carcinogenic.

i'm gonna try this i think but i'm not sure how well it will work. pretty sure i have mild dental fluorosis and my enamel is thin. so my teeth can only get so white because the dentin that shows through isn't white. i wonder if this has anything to do with why it didn't work well for other people here.

iirc my teeth weren't white when they came in. pretty disheatening for a kid just getting his adult teeth.

Don't think I said it could cross the brain blood barrier. Not really sure, but it does get around. Turmeric kills cancer but it isn't the right medicine for everyone. It's been used medicinally for thousands of years by Pacific Islanders and probably people in India. You have to realize that desperate drug companies are designing studies where they give megadoses or weird forms of herbs to try to discredit them. Even then, I wouldn't put it past them to try to fake the results. Haven't looked at the particular study you mentioned but that is generally what is going on.

If you have thin blood, if green tea doesn't agree with you, you might be one of the ones whom turmeric doesn't agree with. Nevertheless, I think that using it for tooth cleaning isn't the same as taking it internally. You use it and spit it out. I haven't used it for tooth cleaning because I have some exposed dentin and stuff and I'm not sure how that would work. Sorry your teeth were born yellow. Maybe a solution will be discovered. Try taking supplements that help your teeth for now. Here's a link to some that may. They are actually for cartilage but also help teeth and bones. Taking this actually makes my teeth fatter and smoother. You may want to add a vitamin K. You could try smaller doses of the type II collagen.

It seems that some people are getting pretty decent results and some not.. Perhaps it can be to the quality of the Tumeric? I mean I tried it didn't notice anything. Seems to be something that works initially then phases off eventually..

I think I know how it works!  My teeth were so yellow that brushing them with bright yellow powder actually made them look less yellow.  Then, after I did this a couple of times, my teeth stayed the same slightly less yellow, but still incredibly bright yellow color.  I love that word.  Yellow.

In fact, my teeth are so yellow that even brushing them with black charcoal powder makes them look lighter!  I could probably brush my teeth with concentrated tannins and they would look less yellow than they are now.

Try chewing the root. The more you chew the whiter your teeth shall shine. :-)

from my experience at least, this thread is non-sense.

on a couple occasions i've bought fresh, organic turmeric from a local farmers market, and after eating a 1/2 - 3/4 inch piece or two, my teeth are noticeably stained yellow.

not only did i find there to be an immediate staining effect from the fresh root, but then when i proceeded to brush my teeth several hours later, i found that my toothbrush bristles had turned a bright yellow-orange as well.

Fresh turmeric for teeth whitening: Would not recommend.
Powdered turmeric may have an abrasive property that is whitening, but I doubt this would offset the staining properties of curcumin

I'd recommend Spry Xylitol clear toothpaste for kids.  It comes in Bubblegum and one other flavor.  You can order it from Swanson's.  I also use plain Peelu fibers mixed into it in a medicine cup.  I also get those from Swanson's.  Together they make my teeth film and toothache free.  It's a remarkable difference.  Apparently the glycerin and SLS in normal toothpaste keep them from remineralizing themselves.  I had no idea.  This toothpaste is free of all the questionable stuff in toothpaste.  This hasn't made my teeth any whiter however.  I still wish I'd been using these products all my life.  I used to use healthfood fluoride toothpaste for kids but I don't need fluoride any more.  The Xylitol does the same thing, only better.  Watch out for toothpastes that use salt and baking soda as abrasives.  They might be too abrasive.  The Peelu fibers are soft plant materials but they effectively scrub the stuff off your teeth.
