Saffron is a gem! I am accumulating saffron and will soon be testing its psychoactivity...

Here is a paper regarding a lot more spices with interesting properties...attached is the main table showing some relevant spices and compounds.

saffron is an amazing spice is expensive but it worth the money, I loved this spice since I tried  Persian food . base on my experience the best saffron is the one originated from Iran , the color strength is much higher and even smell and taste better (it called Persian saffron also). I could not find it in any super marker around me in FL, usa , so I bought some from amazon , ebay and couple of other sites online but best one so far I tried is www.goldensaffron.com their saffron was really good.

I don't like how saffron feels when taken orally, but I feel more alert when just smelling the aroma of it.  However when I made a nasal spray out of it, it didn't do anything.

I like what saffron does orally - a sort of inebriation that is pleasant and energising.

Been dosing dried saffron pistils for the last 2 days, i take a little each time (maybe 10 pistils or something) i make sure i chew it properly (since this can often be beneficial). I suffer from depression from time to time so this is why i got interested in it.. Last two days has been good, it could be coincidence though. I have not noticed any euphoria, but slightly more "pleased" (more than usual).

One thing i think have noticed is my vision got slightly better, which came as a surprise. So i googled vision and saffron and it seems like there is some kind of interaction, something about curing certain eye diseases;

http://www.news-medi...ye-disease.aspx

I will stop taking it and do some type of test to see if its placebo or if i really see better, i checked some fine details in e.g the wall paper from far away with and without glasses and there isn't too much difference really. Certainly hope it's not because i have some eye disease, but not likely..

I am reviving this thread as I am also interested by Crocus Sativus. For depression.
It is good to know that not only the stigmas (Saffron) are potent, but also the petals.
Like in this study:
Crocus sativus L. (petal) in the treatment of mild-to-moderate depression: A double-blind, randomized and placebo-controlled trial

The result of this study is in the line with a resent preclinical study that has reported an antidepressant effect for petal of C. sativus that was similar with its stigma in an animal model for depression (Karimi et al., 2001). As petal of C. sativus is too cheap compared to stigma (saffron) that is one of the most expensive spices in the world, there will be economical interests for further investigations by pharmaceutical industries.

I am planning on growing a few Crocus Sativus bulbs, which are cheap, and making a petals/stigmas tincture.

There are lots of studies on saffron for depression, but this one shows it might also lower homocysteine:

Avicenna J Phytomed. 2018 Jan-Feb;8(1):43-50.

Saffron improved depression and reduced homocysteine level in patients with major depression: A Randomized, double-blind study.

Jelodar G, Javid Z, Sahraian A, Jelodar S.
PMID: 29387573

They used 30mg and it was not an extract:

"Saffron used in this study was of high quality collected from Khorasan province, Iran. The stigmas of C. sativus, which are being used as a food additive and also a herbal medicine, was powdered and packed into capsules in a hygienic manner. Each capsule contained 30 mg of the powder."

"Mean serum homocysteine concentration in experimental group was 9.31±0.9 μmol/l among women before treatment and 7.53±0.6 μmol/l after treatment which showed a significant decrease (p =0.040; Figure 2). Similarly, in men’s group there was a significant decrease in homocysteine level (10.14±1.45 μmol/l before vs. 7.83±0.94 μmol/l after treatment; p=0.049)."

Saffron has a lot of health benefits.Saffron has been shown to be helpful in diseases like depression, alzheimers. It is helpful in weight loss also.

https://www.verywell...n-extract-89511

Sometimes I buy saffron extracts of kancor.

https://www.kancor.c...ffron-extracts/

Researchers report that the yellow stamens of saffron have been mixed with the saffron powder. Sometimes the flowers of other plants, particularly safflower, marigold, tinted grasses, are fraudulently mixed with the genuine stigmas. So we have to keep in mind all these before buying saffron.
