Forget to mention: I also use a magnetic mixer to stir it after it gets hot.

I tincture root powder of astragalus membranaceus / astragalus propinquus in vegetable glycerine at heat, in a glass container with quark stopper and a water bath.  This gives a stronger extract in larger quantity for less money than what I can get retail.  Since getting epitalone the only thing I use astragalus root extract for now is preventing/reversing grey hair.  Perhaps rosemary helps too, seems to help with male pattern balding anyway.

Thanks for the details.

Does it work? Can you tell us something about your or others' experience with it to evaluate that?

Glycerin is something I'd prefer to avoid. Is there any other lipid that you think might work as well for the tincture?

Its slow medicine.  It doesn't create a bunch of stem cells all at once, it just pushes back the genetic clock a little bit at a time.  I'm pretty sure that it helps though.  I use vegetable glycerine because I thought alcohol would be really bad.  You could use water though.  Its not as soluble and doesn't keep as long, but its also easier to prepare with water.

Now I remember the very first time I tinctured astragalus root it was in jojoba oil.  I didn't heat it though that time.  Interestingly, the Astragloside IV cream by terraternal has as first two items in "other ingredients", ''Water (aqua); Simmodsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil (emollient)".  So perhaps those are what I should use instead for solvents.

I didn't read your study, but I don't see anyone here discussing the obvious so I'll try that first.

Hair turns grey because the body's natural antioxidants that prevent formation of hydrogen peroxide get much lower as we get older.    The main free radical is superoxide radical.  Superoxide dismutase (SOD) converts this very dangerous radical to hydrogen peroxide.   Catalase then converts hydrogen peroxide to water and O2.    So as your SOD goes low, and as your oxidant stress goes up, you accumulate more hydrogen peroxide and the hair turns grey.

So rather than getting extremely complex, you might instead look for ways to upregulate your SOD and catalase.   Catalase can be supplemented directly I believe and I don't know how well it absorbs into cells.  I have heard very good things about existing supplements lowering oxidative stress after exercise and speeding up recovery.   So this one is well worth testing.

SOD is available but usually does not survive digestion.   There are newer forms but they all have wheat in them and I don't know enough about them to say anything.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could develop a liposomal SOD and Catalase?    In theory these might be game-changer supplements that stop greying hair and significantly reduce cellular oxidative stress.   The reason is liposomes might allow delivery deep into mitochondria where these superoxide radicals are forming, and that would stop the damage near the source of the problem.

The risk is that the cellular environment might react to these chemicals and downregulate its own production.   But it seems to be an experiment that some brave person here might try.   I definitely think this experiment would be dangerous to attempt if you did not get metabolites measured prior to testing (e.g., a Genova oxidative stress panel) and then periodically repeated after the supplement began.   You would want to think carefully about what it is you need to monitor.  It might be that you would have to go one week on supplements and then N days off supplements to prevent the body from adjusting around your supplement.

I remember experimenting with a few drops of food grade hydrogen peroxide in water, which you are supposed to increase dose on slowly to allow your own antioxidant levels to grow.   I had a bad reaction at some dose and stopped it cold turkey.  The next day I couldn't even move.   There was a weakness in every muscle that literally left me crawling.   A local biochemist told me my body had probably developed very high antioxidant levels and without the stress of the hydrogen peroxide I was wiping out other metabolites until things readjusted.   So this is the kind of thing where if you succeeded in rapidly escalating intracellular levels of SOD, you would want to understand what that might do.

If someone attempted this, it would be wise to separate the SOD and catalase to separate liposomal mixtures, to allow quick compensation of dosing of each one independently.

Would love to see someone try this.

Guess most reviews in this topic are based on experiences with topicals?

Newest picture

I was a toe-headed blonde as a child and medium-dark blond in mid to late 20's. Dark blond brown through thirties and then started to gray at 40.

Some of the hairs are coming back in not gray, but lighter brown/dark blonde.

Dude, the woman that falls in live with you won't give a fuck about your gray hair. Also, you being so insecure is going to be detected, and you will have that much harder time finding someone to share a great loving relationship with. On top of that, younger want to spend more time focusing on feeling good about the things you have control over. Yes , easier said than done, but this is the right way to go about achieving happiness in life.

I am not with anyone right now, and in 40 years old. Shit, I don't even have a career in place yet. I just don't give a fuck to a degree. If you can give off this vibe, the ladies will love you that much more.

Hey, nobody mentioned George Clooney. I always hear young women talking about him. A best friend of mine married a woman 13 years younger, he is 41, and she is 28. He had been salt and pepper since he was 34. When she first saw him, she said his gray hairs was one of his most attractive physical qualities.

Gerontophilia :)
