I was thinking about trying MSM. Maybe my body lacks it. I have hair & skin issues.
But then I read that some people have bad reactions to it.
On one site I read something from someone who wrote that MSM makes the body get rid of toxins which
depending on how many toxins have built up can lead to huge side effects. This is pretty scary. Now I don't
know if I should try it.

I take 2-3 grams a day to help with recovery from training. Love the stuff.

I don't think MSM is such an effective detoxifying agent that you would get a very bad reaction to it(and you should always start low to see how your body reacts).

The most common problems are diarrhea if you are not used to it, so you should increase your dosage slowly. Most people adapt to higher dosages of MSM, so this is no permanent problem.

Also, MSM does not directly contribute to the sulfur cycle, meaning it would be less effective then l-cysteine in replenishing sulfur (which may be the problem with your nails and hair), however l-cysteine has problems on its own, MSM should be safer.

I've eaten tons of it trying to replenish sulfur levels, and it works as long as your sulfur requirements don't go through the roof.

There's a lady who sells MSM in the southwest who says it detoxifies but that isn't true. You'll be fine. I recommend OptiMSM which is sold through different brands. Why? Because other brands contain traces of solvents because they aren't refined enough. I recommend Source Naturals Brand plain powder (the finer particles dissolve faster) dissolved in water twice a day on an empty stomach along with a moderate dose of Vitamin C. I prefer plain Ester C with no bioflavonoids taken out of the capsule and mixed with the MSM. I use a quarter capsule with each dose of MSM. I personally take one teaspoon of MSM twice a day. Wait twenty minutes to eat anything. Taking it along with fruit or fruit juice is o.k., however, as long was it isn't an abnormally large portion. I don't take it after dinner.

Most people need MSM. Hair and skin problems should improve.

You should start with a smaller dose than me and slowly work up. If you feel sluggish or have gas or bloating, cut back. Use room temperature water.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll see if I can get OptiMSM here.
If not I'd have to get another MSM.

Actually the pills which I wanted to buy contain 200mg. This seems like a low dose. How much would you have to take
minimally to feel anything?

Ill-informed persons always like to brush off every side effect or negative response from a natural product as detoxification uber alles. MSM is no exception. I never noticed a problem taking 500mg 2x a day as part of a supplement, but when I experimented with a bulk powder dose as low as 1G all at once.... painful headaches. Either MSM is feeding infections akin to BioPQQ or ketones by juicing energy to the mitochondria directly or there's solvent toxicity issues to consider. I tried TruFlex, but I don't recall having similar issues about a decade ago when I tried OptiMSM.

Do you take MSM all the time or only for a while and then get off it again?

What also concerns me a bit is that some people claim that msm made them more depressed.

Oh wow! So that explains what was going on the other day.  I wondered if this was what certain porn stars deal with
