Do we hold that it is a good idea to keep this a secret, are there advantages to being open about it?

It is helpful for as many people as possible who sign up to be open about signing up. Some feel their career could be affected if they are seen negatively for being cryonicists- it really depends on the field, most don't have that problem.

Being open helps the image of the cryonics community - to show it's growing and composed of regular people. The major reason to be open though is to be able to educate your friends and family about what it is, this will help you with your own planning if something happens to you and also may cause some of them to also try it.

Cryonics is still a fringe concept. If you feel you are a "leader' then be open and blaze a new path for others to follow. If you have too much to lose (image, reputation), then maybe dial it back a little.

Practical advantage:
If you actually desire to be cryopreserved (rather than just express solidarity with the concept), then your long-term survival should strongly incentivize you to be open about it with at least certain individuals. Unambiguously making your wishes known may help prevent interference from anyone who does not share or respect your wishes when you become as helpless as anyone can ever be: clinically dead.

Be open about cryonics with the people who are legally entitled to take decisions on your behalf - parents, spouses, children.

Think very well before talking about it with friends and acquaintances - especially with people you don't know well.
