What do you think of these tests? (and their costs?)

I just spent $29 on a GGT test, which came back 29 IU/L. they say $4.95. But I can buy a amphetamine test for .60 cents on amazon, they want $10 something for one. Most of them look cheap though.

I think it looks fantastic. Cheap pricing, getting it a local drug stores and using such a tiny amount of blood for comprehensive testing would be very useful, I'd think. I read this a while back, just hoping it comes to us here in Ky. Though we'll probably be low on the list. :)

Nice. Do you think it's possible to get these blood tests without having to go through a doctor?

Yes, my understanding is they are teaming up with Walgreens, I think. Can't remember for sure; all I know is the cost and speed would enable me to monitor my health that much more closely.

I just hope it isn't years before its available...

Is there any data on accuracy compared with traditional high blood volume testing?

I don't know. Might want to check out their website (www.theranos.com). O'll certainly up my research if and when it becomes a reality.

Of course, being on Ky, God knows when that will happen.

I walked in to what is currently the lone Theranos in California (in Palo Alto, very near Stanford), expecting to be able to order whatever bloodwork I wanted.  Nope.  You need a "doctor's note."  I've heard rumor that you don't need a doctor's note for the Theranos that are in Arizona.  Haven't verified that though.

I like very much the approach. I am looking at offering as Theranos in Europe but find nothing serious. The technology is such these things should start to be truly low cost vs the fortune I pay every year. I would like the opportunity to do the testing w/o going to a doctor, despite we can argue about regulation of course. I often find myself in the frustrating situation to go to my GP, get what I ask (I even fill the order myself), often realize mistakes they make in entering into the system, get then the results, fight with both GP and insurances to decide what is normal to test and what is "just preventive" and finally beside the obvious (your cholesterol is maybe too high...) finding myself alone in interpreting the results because you cannot really discuss in a 10 mins visit with your GP.

I cannot really wait for Watson Health or similar Google's offerings in Health ......

Unfortunately in US only, you might also be interested to check what LEF is offering.

I have written them to check for more information about possible European suppliers but unfortunately got no reply so far. Maybe they just have no link or business interest to Europe yet but at least I would have appreciated a reply.

A cautionary tale for med-tech startups.  I wonder if anyone confuses Liz Holmes and Liz Parrish?

Elizabeth Holmes the CEO of Theranos was convicted on 4 counts of defrauding investors for more than $1billion and pundits expect her to be sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The idea that a little box could magically duplicate the blood tests available from a well equipped laboratory is totally ridiculous. She must have been a good liar. She should have gone into politics--maybe run for president.

I wished so much she succeeds and I would surely have been having a biased view as many did. I recollect even sending an email in 2015 to check availability of the product in EU (was w/o a reply, I think I am no longer surprised ...). Even veterans in medical technology as Topol somewhat fell in the trap:

"...I met Holmes twice and conducted a video interview with her in 2013, for the medical-information website Medscape. At the time, I gave a fingerstick nanotainer blood sample and within 30 minutes received my results for many routine tests — allegedly showing, for instance, normal glucose and lipid levels in accordance with previous testing. Little did I know that they were run on a standard Siemens machine (I was not allowed to see the lab area) in the back room of Theranos, and had nothing to do with the miniLab. Like so many others, I had confirmation bias, wanting this young, ambitious woman with a great idea to succeed. The following year, in an interview with The New Yorker, I expressed my deep concern about the lack of any Theranos transparency or peer-reviewed research..."
