I love the mental boost and uplift I get from selegeline and am interested in it for its potential neuro-protective effects also. However, if I take it continuously for anything longer than one day, I get significant insomnia (manifesting itself in both inability to fall asleep as well as waking up several times during the night).

Twice before, I tried to take it at 2.5 mg a day and had the same result(insomnia). This time I tried 1.25 mgs a day and again had insomnia (just slightly less severe than when I was taking 2.5 mgs everyday but still severe enough that I was forced to discontinue its use).

My questions ae

1- Is there anything I can do to mitigate this effect (other than insomnia medicines, which I already must use even when not taking selegeline, since I always suffered from occasional insomnia)

2- Do you see any point in going even lower than 1.25 mgs per day? It is of course very hard to predict whether there would be insomnia still at those kinds of doses. However, can you comment on the potential neuro-protective effects of a dose as low as 1.25 mgs? (for someone in hos early 40s)

Thanks a lot

Well, there is point taking 1.25 mgs even every other day, I don't recall where but I read once that you should take 5+mgs/day only after you are 30 years old...

I would second the time question. Also- how long did you try the selegeline? Was the "boost" a little too much?

I'm on a slightly less friendly MAOI, tranylcypromine, and had some of the same insomnia effects. (Also had bad insomnia with severe depression. Random insomnia since age 8 or so as well.) Timing was crucial with adjusting to it, and I noticed that within two months I was pretty set. Never after 3 pm for me.

I'm not sure if other people have noticed the same thing, but I feel more sensitive to sleep hygeine and circadian rhythm disrupting effects on the MAOI. Being strict with behavioral patterns and screen use helped a fair amount.

Anxiety about insomnia always a good thing to go over as well, and can help with functional sleeping. But you probably know all of that- I generally try to avoid most insomnia medications because they tend to exacerbate depression or throw off my patterns.

(Tranylcypromine is MAO-A inhibiting as well though, so it may not apply to you. MAOA does melatonin. It could be that the stimulating quality of selegeline is too much.)

I apologize for the late response. I have tried a few methods as far as time of administration and settled on taking it first thing in the morning when I wake up.

Even then, the insomnia was very notable though

:(

any hope?
