I plan on using either of these to view the skies (moon, planets, stars, etc). I've never owned either. From research I've read that the bigger the zoom on a binocular, the better (100x25 or higher). With telescopes, the bigger the aperture or opening, the better. The binoculars I've looked into cost under $100, the telescopes are a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. I'd prefer something portable that I can grab and drive off somewhere. Should I start with binoculars first?

No no binoculars are actually quite annoying unless you want to sit there holding them all night. With a mount they are slightly better. But they hold nothing against the gain of a decent telescope.

If I could go back in time and start out myself with a decent telescope then I would instead of having to spend years on Binoculars.

But then again I did spend quite a few years with black rings around my eyes, spending 4 hours a night with Binoculars, they did give a great field of view of the night sky, but I could have seen SO MUCH MORE with a decent telescope.

I would suggest that you get a reflecting (cheaper) telescope within your means, or if you don't want a cheap one and can afford something more substantial then spend about $600-$1000 for one and get a refracting telescope (more portable). They are far better at looking at celestial bodies than Binoculars ever could be, it will truly blow your mind. Especially if you start an evening with reading or watching documentaries about Galileo.

Don't spend any less than $300 on a Telescope, the $100 or less ones are utterly useless for anything.
