Dear Sirs

I am using SAMe for depression related issues. My mother just passed away.

Based on various sources, the longest "safe usage" time I have read is 2 years if one is supplementing with 400mg SAMe each day. If one supplements with 800mg each day, then the longest "safe usage time" I've encountered is 42 weeks.

What is such "safe usage time" estimates based upon? The scientific experiment that used the supplement longest?

What is most likely to happen if one use, for example SAMe, longer than these "estimates"? Based on what I've been reading, SAMe has a lot of benefits besides depression alleviation, so why would it be "unhealthy"/"bad" to continue using it more than 42 weeks/2 years?

I'm very sorry to hear about your mother, JohnDoe999. Hope you and your loved ones are managing well.

I don't think there would be many negative consequences to long term usage of SAMe, and while studies may only go for 2 years, I'm pretty sure many people have been taking SAMe continuously for much longer. The only negative I can think of is your body becoming "lazy" and down regulating whatever enzyme/process is used to endogenously produce SAMe. Maybe taking weekends off, or a week every month or two to ensure this doesn't happen?

Best of luck  ;)

You might also give TMG a try. It is far cheaper and isn't nearly as sensitive to moisture, so doesn't come in those annoying individual packages.

Sorry to hear about your mother.. I wish you well & hope you peace in the future.

My advice is to use 200mg of SAM-E, their is no need for such high doses of 400mg or above. Also Use TMG, like @Turnbuckle said.

Not as an alternative, but alongside SAM-E as a stack. Sam-e mainly produces side effects in doses of 400mg and above.

So, low dose Sam-e with TMG, is better than High Dose Sam-e ..Click here to see why.. TMG has other benefits also, aswell as helping with depression.

If you dont respond well to TMG or Sam-e, this more than likely means that your are Over-Methylated.

People who respond well to TMG & Sam-e And also Folate, usually suffer from Under-Methylation.

May i also recommend

Raw Cacao Nibs for depression :  http://www.amazon.co...=Raw Cacao Nibs

I also recommend this for depression & to help cognition and thoughts :

Jarrow Formulas - B-Righthttp://www.amazon.co...s/dp/B0016003Z0

As for Sam-e i recommend you get this, Jarrow 60 x 200mg Tablets http://www.amazon.co... formulas sam-e

And for TMG, i would get this : http://www.amazon.co...ords=jarrow tmg

Ive used Jarrows TMG before, but i now use Bulkpowders TMG http://www.bulkpowde...hylglycine.html, its twice as cheap but its only available if you are in the UK or EU.

Or use iherb or whatever site you prefer, i find Amazon prime the easiest, i presumed you was in the USA so i linked you to Amazon.com, im in the UK and can also get the same stuff from Amazon UK.

I have also found A Gluten Free diet can also help reduce Depression, by being able to function better on a daily basis, i have found myself being less focused on my feelings.

I've been supplementing with 400 mg of Jarrow SAMe for years without any perceivable negative consequences. It's important for the OP to know that the body naturally produces SAMe from the amino acid methionine. It isn't a drug.
The next time you get a blood draw you should ask for a homocysteine test. That way you will know if you may have methylation issues. TMG wasn't very effective for me, but I might have not taken enough, since the ones I bought were horse pill tablets. The 5 methyl folate form of folic acid, and sublingual methyl B-12 were effective for me.
I still take SAMe for liver protection and overall support.

Thanks for the kind words about my mother, and thanks for your valuable information!

Mr. Nootropic: Thanks for all you recommendations.I will look into this.

Kevnzworld; I've just taken a homocysteine test. It gave me 8,8.  What does this signal in relation to methylation issues/ SAMe usage?

8.8 is relatively good, a little lower would be better. It means that you have normal methylation and get enough B vitamins. Whether or not to supplement with SAMe is optional. It has been shown to be beneficial for depression, but I'm not sure if it would be for people with normal natural levels. I opt to supplement due to light- moderate wine consumption. You can search SAMe at LEF.org for more info.
