Hi All,

I have Bipolar 2 and have been taking a number of medications over the years, SSRI, SNRI, Anti Convulsant, about 16 overall. About 4 years ago I have been developing serious memory issues. I find it extremly difficult to recall things. The last SSRI I took Topomax (about 3 months ago), made things 10 times worse. I am 28 years old and do not currently take any more medication.

I am sure I have no issues encoding information just retrieval.

When I close my eyes I cannot remember an event its like the memory is locked away tight.

I get stuck for words in conversation

I have problems with the days of the week like knowing what day it is today.

I have trouble remembering what I did this morning or what I did yesterday.

I can never remember what I did more than a day ago.

My memory is selective in what I forget.

I cannot remember anything about the past anymore than a day.

I sometimes forget the names of people, places that I have known for years.

I cannot remember the information I studied in college, my last paper was submitted less than a month ago and I have no idea what I wrote it on.

I can remember information if you show me pictures yet I still cannot close my eyes and picture the event. Its weird.

Any ideas on what is causing this, I feel like the medications have somehow supressed memory recall. Is there anything I could do to maybe reverse this problem?

(NB I'm not a doctor.)
This sounds like serious amnesia, and you definitely need medical help specifically for the memory issues rather than for your bipolar issues. You should ask to see an amnesia specialist. The doctors also need to rule out organic causes (actual brain malfunction or disease). There are some viral causes of memory loss, as well as ischemic causes, basically loads of possibilities that need to be investigated thoroughly before any treatment plan can be devised. Get professional help. I wouldn't go trying out random nootropics before ruling out the more serious causes.
