Just chiming in here, I've used astaxanthin at 4, 6, 12 and 18 mg doses, and have noticed no hypomania that I can recall. That said, when I had the 4 mg pills I was taking them nearly daily. The 6 mg pills I took just about every day for two weeks, then reserved them for days I knew I'd be needing them a bit more. n=1

Not too keen on the gynecomastia possibility, so I think I'll be taking a PASS.

I'm gonna have to say "No" to that. Why? Because you eat nothing but diatomaceous earth, limestone, milk, blanched almonds, and hydrogen peroxide!

Seriously, though, it may indicate a health issue that needs looking into. http://www.mayoclini...rs/faq-20058080

According to that page, you could have a bile duct blockage, or there might be some other factor which you can read about there. I highly doubt that astaxanthin has anything to do with it, unless you've seen a very strong correlation between poop color and astaxanthin use over several days, and the poop color returns to normal when you stop the asta. If that's the case, then I'm baffled, but maybe someone else has insight into how that could happen.

THe poops go back to normal color after stopping the astaxanthin.  Taking it causes them to be lighter.

That's strange. So I looked up "astaxanthin stool color" and here are the results: https://www.google.c...hin stool color

Lots of mentions of orange-tinted poop, does this fit your situation? doesn't sound like it. But there might be some kind of interaction specific to you based on other things you take, your diet, your body...

Anyone taking this long term still?

I know a guy taking 150-200mg a day.. yes, 200mg a day. He says the more the better. 200$ a month on asta. I've started taking it myself now and curious to see what affects it has on me especially at the higher dose ranges. Ill take it steady at around 24mg a day for the first month though to gauge any adverse reactions.

I take 12mg every day, it makes my voice deeper, possibly helps with energy. Also makes my skin immune to sunburn (when I travel to sunny countries).

Is that a good thing though? Isnt sun tanning a protective mechanism to help the skin protecting itself against radiation?

Ever try super loading it?

If it protects the skin against uva, maybe it makes sense that you get no sunburn?

I have noticed something with Ginkgo Biloba, Red Reishi, EVOO, B Vitamins, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Milk Thistle, Garlic, Ginger, Red Chillies, Green Chillies, Mustard Seed...

Astaxanthin or any carotenoid isn't one of them.

Yes, it is a good thing, if you protect yourself against stress. But astaxanthin is about as interesting as the square root of 8.

I've taken 6-12mg/day for years and have not noticed any sort of nootrophic effects. I am of Irish and Scandanavian decent and live in the desert Southwest.  I can attest to it's skin protective abilities but have never noticed any sort of mania. I recently stopped taking it due to the DHT issue.

It's not been shown that astaxathin per se reduces dht I think. I experience extra beard growth and lower voice for instance when I take it, which seems to contradict that thesis. It's been proven good for boosting sperm also so it can't be too bad for males.

It was suggested by Area1255 that it may decrease conversion of test into DHT, but I have not seen a study either. I'm going to abstain from it for awhile just to see if it has been the cause of my low libido. The timing of the low libido and initiation of astaxanthin use coincide very closely, so it's worth a try.

I've been messing around with astaxanthin for abour half a year. I can definitely attest that astaxanthin causes slight decrease in libido for me @4mg every other day (now brand). However looking back at my experience i can seen an increase in bipolar tendencies. Other than that i totally love astaxanthin for the added skin tan, incredible energy and anti-oxidant properties. I will need to look up more information about the bipolar thing, because its causing some worry over here.
