See thread title: I started taking the below supplements a month or so ago; could any of them cause an increase in libido initially, but then a drop in libido later? I know Pycnogenol affects testosterone in some way:

  • Pycnogenol
  • ALCAR
  • Grape Seed Extract
  • Ashwagandha
  • Rhodiola

Rhodiola = MAO / COMT inhibition plus amps up beta-endorphin and suppresses cortisol.

Ashwagandha = GABA mimetic and AcHE inhibitor

Grape Seed Extract = NOS Booster and possibly mild aromatase inhibiton. Also may inhibit histamine.

ALCAR = BDNF Booster, Serotonin modulator and acetyl donor.

Pycnogenol = primary effects on NOS and free radicals.

Conclusions: Hard to be sure but it might too much noradrenaline and serotonin from all the MAO / COMT Inhibition as well as ALCAR.

ALCAR raises noradrenaline, acetylcholine and serotonin, with minor effects on dopamine. It does have potent effects on BDNF and other nerve growth factors though.

What standardization of Rhodiola are you taking?

This combination generally should be very beneficial upon sexual arousal and libido.

The only thing I can think of is as I said  - too much serotonin/noradrenaline results.

Try adding folate,b12,L-histidine and L-citrulline.

The Rhodiola has 3% total rosavins and 1% min salidrosides, which I take on a semi-daily basis, maybe 4-5 days a week, whereas I take the others daily.

I also take fish oil, 1,000 IU vitamin D3, 400mg magnesium glycinate and 25mg chelated zinc, but those I have taken for years. I will look into the ones you suggested, thank you sir.

They all will raise histamine  - histamine is a serotonin modulator - helping to depress excessive serotonergic currents and thus preventing the dampening of libido by serotonin.

Should I take them daily, and at what dosage? I think I read somewhere on here that it's only necessary to take B-vitamins once a week.

L-Histidine on an empty stomach, 2.5 grams twice a day or thrice a day.

Folate you can take at 800 mcg - 1200 a day with no problems. Also helps boost nitric oxide as well as histamine.

b12 = 500 or 1000 mcg twice a day. In a week or two you will see positive results, assuming that is your issue.

  • ALCAR

Alcar can cause exactly what you described, I've experienced it myself.  I forget but there is a mechanism of it that helps sexual function I believe aiding sperm.  But, alcar can also inhibit thyroid receptors, which likely can cause a libido reduction.
