A few years ago I started taking Probiotics (Custom Probiotics capsules).  I stopped after seeing some article about a heart infection.  I tend to regret stopping because I believe that was related to someone who had a compromised immune system.

Regardless, I take doxycycline daily (half dose), and I think even though I am pretty regular due to my vegetable / fruit intake (cut out grains, starches and pretty much any non-fruit sugars (relatively low fruit diet right now)).

But I think it might be wise for longevity purposes to ensure my gut flora is well maintained especially since I'm on antibiotics.  Ok so that's the background.

I bought some (expensive) Theralac yesterday, and what intrigues me is that they imply that 30 billion CFU's * 14 days = 420 billion CFU's being pretty much enough to restore your gut flora balance with those 5 strains (plus then a maintenance dose of 2 caps a week)

What I don't understand is how 420 billion can "make one whole" if you have 100+ trillion bacteria in your gut?  We have literally POUNDS of gut bacteria in us, right?

How can even 4 bottles of this stuff make the difference to overcome any "bad guys" in the intestines?

Secondly question - if we have upwards of 100 different strains of "good guys" in our gut...  It's just interesting that the most you can get in some of the more uncommon brands, is 10-11 strains.  And the most common products have maybe 5 strains.  Is 5 stains really "good enough"?

Thank you for helping to increase my wisdom here :)

Brew up some Kefir at home.  You'll love it - covers all your bases, and then some.

Bad idea to cut out all starches. You need fermentable carbs for your butyrate producing gut bugs.  It can take a while, but you'll have digestion problems over time on a low carb diet that don't contain enough prebiotics (veggies and fruit aren't enough). The lactic probiotics won't do a major difference as they are not the basis of a good microbiota. I'm not saying to start eating wheat again, but there's sources of starch that are really healthy for the gut (tubers, sweet potatoes, parboiled rice, peas..).

As for myself, I use the bob's red mill potato starch trick (a resistant starch source) and it is fantastic. Google it, it helps with digestion, lower inflammation, lower blood sugar and helps you sleep deeper.
