Good day,

I've tried posing this question in several other forums to no avail.  Everyone seems to think I'm a marketer.  I've been reading up on people getting collapsed lungs and the dangers of inhaling butane.  I've also read that since vapor isn't as dense or thick as smoke, your lungs can take more, thus filling up your lungs to full capacity. So, I have 2 concerns regarding vaporization of herbs in general and smoking bowls, pipes, or bongs using butane lighters.

I will refrain from stating which partiucular vaporizer unit that I am using now to avoid suspicion that I am marketing a product.  My vape heats up via electricity and does not use butane.  However, I still have concerns.  If I hold the vapor in long enough, it seems to fill my lungs to full capacity to a point in which I literally can't allow any more vapor into my lungs.  I know it's not smoke, but is this safe?  When I do this, it hurts a little.  But it doesn't hurt terribly.  Similar perhaps, to taking a really huge bong rip.  Has there been any research on the safety of filling one's lungs to full capacity with vapor?  Can it cause harm?

My second concern is Inhaling butane.  Do we inhale a little butane everytime we spark bongs or bowls with Bic lighters?  Sometimes I really light the shite out of the bowl.  When I take a hit, am I inhaling butane at all, or enough to cause harm?  If so, I may just start using matches.  I enjoy cannabis quite a bit, but want to be sure I am using it in the most safe and harmless ways possible.

Your input is greatly appreciated,

Green

Filling your lungs to capacity with vapor is safe. Since the 1950's nebulizers have been used to administer asthma medication with propylene glycol. Both vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol are now used in electronic cigarettes. I have smoked e-cigs for a few years now. They do not negatively effect my lung capacity and ability to exercise like smoking cigarettes would, however, they do seem to irritate my sinuses. I would imagine it's pretty normal to feel a bit of pressure/pain when you fill your lungs to capacity, since you are going against your instincts. Nevertheless it's something that endurance athletes do all the time.

There is no evidence that small quantities of butane are harmful. Consider that abusers of inhalants ("huffers") have to inhale a fairly large quantity of gas for the lack of oxygen to produce euphoria and the subsequent damage to brain tissue.
