A quick search on amazon shows this market is becoming very crowded.

I'm interested in trying only those products that avoid use of Huperzine A (way too many contraindications)  as well anything over stimulating like guarana or yohimbine.

Ideally I also prefer to see a list the actual ingredient amounts instead of 'proprietary blend', which IMHO is mostly marketing nonsense.

Suggestions?

Also want to avoid supplements containing St John's Wort, too many reports of hypericin-mediated photosensitized eye damage. Not worth the risk IMHO.

What I have to say will probably sound useless (and untypical of this forum), but I do not think we need brain supplements. We need a good healthy unprocessed diet and then our brain will be fine. Real foods contain thousands of nutrients, many of which have not been even discovered yet, which synergistically provide everything we need for a healthy brain. I do not see how selected supplements, in a mix or a personal stack, can add to this, because we cannot be healthier than healthy. At best (or worst) they can provide stimulation--but stimulation, by its very nature, is transitory ... it is an artificial state. To live at one's best, one needs to achieve a level whereby one's mind works at peak capacity all the time ... until one necessarily starts becoming sleepy towards bedtime.

Having said that, I do experiment with supplements, and sometimes I have taken multis with jots of brain-benevolent herbs in them, such as the Source Naturals Life Force ones, which contain ashwagandha, schizandra, etc (no St John's Wort). Those made no perceptible difference to how my brain worked, but they likely at least did no harm. If I have a lot of work to do, I might take bacopa or rhodiola supplements, but I cycle these, as I regard them as stimulating. I do not want to feel I need supplementary stimulants in order just to get by.

I am a big fan of herbs and spices. Many of them ... turmeric, ginger, etc. ... are said to be brain friendly. One can add one's own spice mixes to food, and this is very much cheaper than supplements.

Mostly agree with you, especially in regards to herbs, spices and in terms of long term safety and efficacy. A typical 'brain supplement' might contain a combination Vinpocetine, Phosphatidylserine, maybe some gingko and small amounts of B vitamins.  Probably safe but not something I would ever take on a daily basis.

Have you ever tried any of the more 'bioavailable' forms of curcumin, especially those that are supposed to cross the bb barrier?

And speaking of herbs, am liking the effects of forskolin in small doses <= 10mg, the main ingredient in ciltep.

Not a fan of "all-in-one supplements", but here's a few goodies to check out:

LEF Brain Shield

Alpha BRAIN

Elebra

Brain Octane

With the last one being my favourite... Here is some more info on it: http://www.longecity...nyone-tried-it/
