Hey guys,

For about a year I've been taking 1mg of melatonin before bed. I take it 5 days a week with 2 off. In the past month or so Ive found that I'm very tired and struggle to get up on the mornings after I haven't taken it. Could this mean I'm becoming dependant on it?

Thanks

You seem to be much better off than me, since my experience has been noticeably worse with prolonged use. Even though its use is considered to be relatively safe, with large doses and for long periods of time, I certainly seem to be an exception. Melatonin has destroyed my sleep pattern and made me go through a very painful, full blown insomnia that resulted in a failed relationship, a few seizures and a lot of wasted time and health. I have used it extensively for 3-4 months and started gradually noticing differences in my sleep schedule - withdrawing was a nightmare..  During regular use, at first you sleep properly duration wise, then it degrades to 5h, then to 3h, then to 1-2h at best - popping extra pills simply makes no difference in the end. There were times when I couldn't get any sleep for 4-5 days straight. I was desperate. I had to start using neuroleptics - namely Quetiapine, along with Diazepam and some other stuff.

Regarding the dose - there have been studies showing that a much lower (~5-10 times) dose of melatonin works better, than 1mg i.e. and as you can see, from my example, developing tolerance is not something unheard of.
