Researching the difference's between regular Omega 3and Krill oil I discovered a key ingredient in the latter is Astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant with many beneficial properties.

Not wanting to purchase ultra expensive KO I thought a more cost effective alternative is to purchase just the Astaxanthin and supplement with regular Omega 3.

Rsearching Astaxanthin further I uncoveredsome other 'potential' side effects

'Other potential side effects include increased skin pigmentation (astaxanthin is the compound that gives flamingos, salmon, and shrimp their pink color) and hair growth, hormonal changes, lowered blood levels of calcium, decreased libido, breast enlargement in men, and changes in blood tests.'

Actual dosage level was not indicated but other than NOT using this supplement, can anyone suggest possible ways to compensate for these possible side effects?

Has anyone reading this ever experienced any of these?

Few people (read: no one) on this forum consider Dr. Weil a credible source of information. There are zero citations on pubmed for astaxanthin and any of those negative effects. Ignore.

Those potential side effects, assuming they are at all substantiated, would only be the case with abnormally high doses. I agree with the above, i.e. ignore.

ah dr weil. i remember that guy. he used to make huge business in the supplement industry back in the days. selling all types of books, drinks, supplements in general. i was one of the idiots buying them going "dr weil is soooo cool". his b-vitamin complex had his trademark photo looking up like THE MAN. his books were some of the biggest crap i know of now, but back then, i thought they were cool in style. then again, i was a dumb teen! anyway wasnt long before all his stuff starting being discontinued and removed from the market for various unknown reasons. what happened he just faded away from the scene and i thought he took heroin to ease his failing business management and probably od, but i guess he is still trying real hard now days!
