I wanted to put this is in 'Lifestyle' on purpose, to catch more than just 'Exercise' followers.

Simple questions:

1) What kind of exercise routine/system do you have (or don't, in case you avoid exercise), and

2) What are the principles behind the routine - why / how do you think the said routine is good for you?

The reason for asking is, I have formulated some core principles related to exercise for myself, and would like to see how other people see these questions. I'm curious to see if there's a consensus on Longecity, or do the opinions vary.

I don't have a regular fitness routine, but weekends, as soon as the sun is up I pound the pavement with my road bike for an hour.

Usually try and push myself to the limit, climb a few hills if possible.

This has been my routine for the past 20 years and pretty confident my aerobic fitness is equal to or better most guys in their 20's.

Hope to continue this until I'm in my 70's and beyond.

By 8am I'm home showered, and ready to have an amazing day.

In combination with the fresh air feel I get a better workout than working out for half a day indoors.

HIIT seems to have the best scientific support. That is what I do mostly, but I also go for a long run once in a while. Play sports once in a while.

Lately I like to do things that are constructive. Exercise that gets something accomplished. I bike about 3 miles one way to work. I grow a garden. Do landscaping in my yard. Cut wood for the stove, etc...

I go to the gym 4 times a week. My routine at the gym normally follows this pattern.

20 minute warm up on the treadmill

2 x 20 minute circuit training routines

10 minutes on the bike or treadmill at a slow to moderate pace

stretching

An example circuit training routine is 50 jumps with the jump rope, 10 standing vertical jumps onto a two foot platform, 10-15 reps incline dumbbell press, 10-15 reps incline dumbbell fly, 30 seated knee ups.

I complete a circuit without resting between exercises and upon completion of the circuit take a 30-90 second rest. I run through the circuit 3 to 4 times before moving on to a different circuit routine.

The good thing about circuit training is that you get the benefits of high intensity interval training (HIIT) along with the benefits of weight lifting. Since it is a mix of both I believe it helps me to build a healthy well round body which is what I am aiming for.
