Hi

In general, when do supplements expire? 1 year after the manufacturing date, or can one use them after 1 year? When I buy supplements, I sometimes get supplement which has only 3 months left of the 1 year period after manufacturing, and if I am cycling that supplement, there is no way for me to use it within 3 months.

Is it only the quality/potency of the supplement that is reduced as time passes by, or can it in some manner be dangerous?

Another question I have is about dividing supplements. If you cut a solid multivitamin in two, will you have the same amount of ingredients in each part?

And what if I split a 300 mg ALA powder capsule in two, or a DHEA capsule in two, will the substance be evenly divided in the two halfs?

Most supps I've known expire 2 years from date of manufacture...  I believe this is an industry standard.  Unfortunate, as different supps go bad much sooner than others.

Fish oil for instance can go rancid within a year, even sealed in its bottle, and once you crack open the bottle, within a month or so.

Something like Vitamin-C or Magnesium Citrate may last half a decade in the bottle, and still be good a year after you first open it.

Someone should set up proper guidelines and post them for reference.

If you haven't used your supplements up by the expiration date you have three days left to get rid of them. Otherwise, they will turn into a pink slime slowly burning through the bottle and leaving a hole in your cupboard. This will happen regardless of what those supplements actually contain.

Just what I thought, but I would presume it was green slime.

That's only true for green food supplements.

I heard that it's actually 3 days and 2 hours 7 minutes after expiry and that they then become explosive, potentially as powerful as plastic explosive.

Mmm, well, I always thought this could be prevented by carrying a dead cat over your left shoulder? Thought I read something along these lines at Mercola...

That's right of course (after all, you read it at Mercola). Few people do, however, since it has become unfashionable. That's why Mercola always includes a small amount of premium quality dead cat extract in his supplements, turning them unperishable. People often complain about the price of Mercola's supplements, but few know about the arcane wisdom going into his formulations. Any medieval alchemist would tip his hat to him for sure.

Oh, did I mention that all of Mercola's supplements are 100% free from the highly toxic magnesium stearate?
