I've read in the past that large doses of Vit C protects the liver, and then I come across this study;

"Conclusion: A mega-dose of vitamin C is not safe and can cause liver injury."
https://journals.ju....ticle/view/2763  (pdf link inside)

"Methods: A mega-dose of vitamin C (1000 mg/kg/day) was administered by oral gavage to male Wistar rats for 60 days. Both biochemical and histopathological measures were undertaken."

"Results: The results showed that a mega-dose of vitamin C significantly elevated lipid peroxidation and transaminase activity level in addition to the significant suppression of antioxidant enzymes activities. These results were consistent with the presence of histological lesions."

I've been taking about 20 g/d of vitamin C for the last 6 years. Liver enzymes serum tests all improved, once tested oxidated LDL and glutathion peroxidase came back midrange.

Maybe because I'm not a male Wistar rat? Which like all other mammals - except us, primates and guinea pigs - endogenously syntheses between 3,000 mg and 13,000 mg of ascorbic acid daily (adjusted for human body weight and under ordinary conditions).
