Hi everyone,

I started using L-Tyrosine to increase the amount of free dopamine in my brain, and was wondering if there was any risk of those dopamine receptors downregulating in response? What signals tell various receptors to downregulate, and is there any way to use chemicals to upregulate dopamine receptors?

Yes they do downregulate eventually - relative to the dose and how often you take it.

Stick with minimum effective dose and use only when really needed, take breaks, or adopt a 5 day on 2 day off dosing schedule.

Typical substances that will re-sensitize/upregulate your dopamine receptors are NMDA antagonists (Memantine or Magnesium), Uridine, CDP-Choline and Sulbutiamine have also shown upregulation activity. Healthy habits such as no-fap, intermittent fasting, exercise and cold showers are also helpful.

Why do NMDA antagonists affect dopamine regulation? Also, how do you maintain sensitivity over time, while ramping it up when you need it? Also also, is there anything like a beginner's guide for nootropics and brain health, or is this all learn-as-you-go?
