Do any of you get massive melatonin hangovers when consuming over say 7.5 mg? I took roughly 2.5mg as timed release and 5mg as instant release about a day ago and I am literally still dragging from it as if it is half still in me. I know melatonin greatly decreases glucose supply to the brain and I used a brand of it as timed release 2.5 mg (in half) called nature's finest. It wasn't scored though so who knows if I got the whole 5mg. So it could have in actuality been 5mg timed release + 5mg instant release sublingual. All I know is that today I'm still dragging. There are tons of studies showing people taking higher doses of melatonin and I'm not sure if they are as affected by it as I am but it could also be that this brand was investigated to have found the wrong supplements in their products with that big walmart/walgreens etc supplement scandal that went down months ago. I guess I could have gotten double or triple. lol

Just curious if anyone else has had a melatonin hangover last a day+.

I use Life Extension 750mcg Timed Release, and I usually only take 1/3-1/5 of the capsule, and I get hangovers from it anyways. I always feel super fatigued(I normally have fatigue but it makes it 3 times worse), and I get moderate headaches and often mild nausea. Usually lasts for about 4-5 hours into the day.

You're taking waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much.

Healthy men produce about 0.150 mg melatonin; women, 0.100 mg.  The average person doesn't need much more of the hormone than that.  Like any other hormone and your system, if you don't play by their rules, they're going to jack you up.

The reason supplemental melatonin is manufactured and advertised in doses larger than 0.5 mg is because only a melatonin overdose can induce the kind of fatigue people think is the "natural sleep aid" part of melatonin.  There is nothing natural about it.  This is the problem with people following what the supplement industry and celebrity doctors say.    Melatonin is not supposed to make you tired, or induce sleep, it's a hormone for regulating sleep, more like a sleep timer.

Oh I know, that's why I bought the lowest dosage I could find and take a fraction of it. Although I don't know if your amounts are correct. My research indicated a 150 pound man produces .89mcg each night on average. Melatonin also shouldn't be used while exposed to large amounts of light since it increases the risk of cancer under those conditions, and it shouldn't be used for more than 5 days in a row. In fact, it should only be used sparingly, for situations like 'resetting' a messed up sleep schedule, or jet-lag.

At my last job, I learned about a 'parent' who was giving her 8 year old daughter prescription amphetamines(adderall), prescribed by her 'doctor' which is really a fucking dangerous drug dealing idiot psychiatrist, and then 10 mg of melatonin each night to sleep. That poor girl is going to die young, and have all sorts of health problems. I tried to say something but the evil bitch was all "her 'doctor' knows better than you". People make me sick.

Well 0.89 mcg is a lot smaller than 100 mcg, that would make the 1 mg melatonin an even worse overdose.  Ouch.

I also feel your pain about that situation.  I met some woman in a drug store last year, she mistook me for an employee and asked me what the best melatonin is ... and long story short, she's been dosing her 17 year old son 12 mg nightly after reading some book by some celebrity doctor, and found a local doctor who will tell her whatever she wants to hear.  She got took it very personally when I pointed out that the brand she thought was awesome was actually bullshit, and became argumentative when I suggested some Natrol 3 mg sublingual instead (only because it was the least offensive melatonin product in the store), asked me what books I've written lately and what my educational background was, other lulzy stuff.  When I told her, she changed the subject.

Anyway eventually I talked her down and into getting the Natrol instead of that other awful megadose thing (I forgot what brand).  But I couldn't get her to agree to give him only one or half of one, she wanted to give him two.  Because apparently he has a "melatonin deficiency," of course diagnosed without any clinical testing.  So she tells me he's gained all this weight, he has no energy, he broke out in terrible acne (after the melatonin, not just because of puberty), he's so depressed, he's failing out of high school, has a "glutamate allergy"  (I literally had to turn away when she said that because I couldn't keep a straight face), and had to be on a high-protein diet because carbs are the devil, and the doc put him on an antipsychotic and antidepressant.

All that shit, after the melatonin supplements (which I bet started when that low-carb diet fucked up his sleep and probably mental state, academic performance too).  But she was up on that religious high-horse people can get on with their diets and lifestyles, and her idols could do no wrong.

I wanted to put my foot up her ass.  Fucking hysterical, narcissistic cunt.  Amen to that, brother.

Actually now that I think about it... the way she was latched onto that shitty melatonin, and her ideologies ... yet asked me what the best melatonin in the store was as if she didn't know anything about it ... did she do that on purpose?  Come in the store to buy stuff and see an opportunity to preach at someone, or argue with them?

I wouldn't put it past her.  She was really bizarre.

Nah people are just like that unfortunately. Sometimes I wish I could control everything and save everyone, but realize I can't. Have to detach and let go, it's really sad. Stupid people make me hate the world. =(

I feel better few days after overdosing than I normally was before the drugs. I took 5mg melatonin but effect wears off depending on how strong you are both mentally and psychically.
