I was hoping someone overhere could help me out.
I am wondering about the mechanism behind the tolerance building with methylphenidate.
Even though the tolerance doesn't build as quickly as with some other drugs, it does build up slowly.
After using it on a regular basis (I have been prescribed 54 mg slow release + 20 mg fast acting daily), I experience some 2-3 days to come back to a certain base-line: I guess this is the experiential side of the tolerance mechanism...?
My question is, what is happening exactly? As methylphenidate is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, does my brain react to that by activating or even creating more dopamine transporters? Or does it lower the levels of dopamine to balance the effects? Or something totally different?
I have been searching on google scholar but haven't been able to find something useful.
