I have heard that glutathione is useful for a bunch of things.  I am mostly interested in it for preventing hearing damage.  They say NAC which boosts glutathione can prevent the onset of damage following loud noises if taken before and after.

But using NAC regularly bothers some people.  And I've never heard how much you're supposed to use.

I have seen glutathione supplements ranging from low doses to 500mg per pill.  But people say it doesn't survive the stomach and so you don't get much of it.

The only other thing I've seen that claims to boost glutathione is this protein by swanson

How much glutathione should one take, and how do you know when you have enough?

SAM-e contains the pre-formed building blocks that enable your body to produce its own glutathione.

SAM-e ain't cheap, but I've found the 200mg sized pills work about as well as the 400's and save money this way.  Lower back pain is much better, liver enzymes are now down in the teens, even though I tip a few brewskies most every evening.  I get results I can feel and see in my labs.

I usually have to obtain the 200mg pills from an online source, as everything in the stores seems to be 400mg.  Vitamin Shoppe has some Jarrow 200's that are a good buy.

Take SAM-e on an empty stomach with a full glass of water for maximum absorption and utilization.

Vitamin-C helps recycle glutathione, so don't get caught short on this important vitamin.  I take this separately from SAM-e.  Don't know if it might compromise the SAM-e if taken together, but why take chances with this expensive and remarkable supplement.

I've taken it for years and I can tell you it works (in the range of 1/2 to 1 gram) and has been shown scientifically to work, at least for one brand of reduced glutathione--Setria.

Randomized controlled trial of oral glutathione supplementation on body stores of glutathione

PURPOSE:
Glutathione (GSH), the most abundant endogenous antioxidant, is a critical regulator of oxidative stress and immune function. While oral GSH has been shown to be bioavailable in laboratory animal models, its efficacy in humans has not been established. Our objective was to determine the long-term effectiveness of oral GSH supplementation on body stores of GSH in healthy adults.

METHODS:
A 6-month randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of oral GSH (250 or 1,000 mg/day) on GSH levels in blood, erythrocytes, plasma, lymphocytes and exfoliated buccal mucosal cells was conducted in 54 non-smoking adults. Secondary outcomes on a subset of subjects included a battery of immune markers.

RESULTS:
GSH levels in blood increased after 1, 3 and 6 months versus baseline at both doses. At 6 months, mean GSH levels increased 30-35 % in erythrocytes, plasma and lymphocytes and 260 % in buccal cells in the high-dose group (P < 0.05). GSH levels increased 17 and 29 % in blood and erythrocytes, respectively, in the low-dose group (P < 0.05). In most cases, the increases were dose and time dependent, and levels returned to baseline after a 1-month washout period. A reduction in oxidative stress in both GSH dose groups was indicated by decreases in the oxidized to reduced glutathione ratio in whole blood after 6 months. Natural killer cytotoxicity increased >twofold in the high-dose group versus placebo (P < 0.05) at 3 months.

CONCLUSIONS:
These findings show, for the first time, that daily consumption of GSH supplements was effective at increasing body compartment stores of GSH.
