Most supplements that have to do with this are aimed at treating osteoarthrits. Will any prevent it?

SAM-e (S-Adenosyl methionine) relieves arthritis pain as well or better than NSAID's, and even about as well as celecoxib/Celebrex.
http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/15102339
"SAMe has a slower onset of action but is as effective as celecoxib in the management of symptoms of knee osteoarthritis."
As SAM-e is not a pain reliever, I assume the action must be one of reduced inflammation in the joint which should make it good for prophylaxis.
For preserving bone mineral density, IP6 (inositol hexaphosphate) appears to work well. Strange a mineral chelator would be good for bone density, but apparently it is.
http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/19053869
"Bone mineral density increased with increasing phytate consumption. Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated that body weight and low phytate consumption were the risk factors with greatest influence on bone mineral density. Phytate consumption had a protective effect against osteoporosis, suggesting that low phytate consumption should be considered an osteoporosis risk factor."
http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/21794821
"The results obtained seem to indicate that the adequate consumption of phytate may play an important role in the prevention of bone mineral density loss in postmenopausal women."
Keep bones strong and inflammation in the joint low and you're doing about all you can. Keeping weight low should also be helpful.
