The worlds oceans are vast and not properly researched, there are still tons of things down there about which we know nothing.

Would it be possible to speed up this process by crowd sourcing it?

Could we build small very resistant and cheap probes, with cameras, which could be produced in large quantities and help with that task?

Shouldnt it be possible to make them in a way that they will stay deep under water and be brought back to the surface by certain currents, so that they may be retrieved and the data collected?

More people have step foot on the moon than on the deepest of the ocean floor.

In searching for the missing aircraft MH370 they are scouring a vast area of the Indian ocean. It is very costly but the data they collect (or could be collecting as a secondary objective) could be worth some money to the right people.

Who knows, one day we may have underwater habitats for small colonies of mankind to survive after a holocaust or some other natural disaster so getting to know the environment would be a good idea

I can't see why we couldn't have underwater drones do the work for us at much less expense though.
