Hello,
I have MTHFR-mutation. I don't know whether Homozygote or Heterozygote so I'll be tested for it in 1 month. My mother is Homozygote so I am at least Heterozygote or maybe homozygote if my father is at least heterozygote + bad luck.
I read a study which said people with schizophrenia with this mutation benefit from taking Metafolin. Particularly in the Negative symptom domain.
And exactly this is happening to me. I have some flavor of psychosis and I got myself Metafolin-like (glucosamine salt of (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate) pills and I'm feeling my best since 12 years.
So my question is, is Folate from folate rich food already the activated form of Folate (5-methyltetrahydrofolate)? or is it a different form that needs the MTHFR to turn into 5-methyltetrahydrofolate?
I'd rather eat lots of folate rich food if it actually would work, but I have my doubts. My googling abilities failed completely on this one. So please help me out.
This question is very valid IMO because I believe taking a kind of folate that would not be converted to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate could actually be harmful because it would accumulate in the body without doing anything. And folic acid has been associated with risk of cancer and having lots of that accumulating.... I don't like the idea. So either there is 5-MTHF in the "food"or I'll go on taking my cheap 5-MTHF pills. btw, No Deplin in Germany AFAIK.

P.s: Is it possible that there are different kinds of folate in different food? I crave all kinds of liver like crazy although liver looks actually disgusting.
