I began using diphenhydromine, I have no idea of the spelling, to sleep thru the night w/o getting up to pee three or more times a night. On last sunday's version of Peoples Pharmacy*** I heard it mentioned that my sleep aid is an agonist to the cholinergic system. That seems like a bad thing so I stopped using it about six days ago. What I don't know is if this `anti' or agonistic behavior is part of it's design.... i.e. turn it off for a while to encourage sleep. So long as this behavior isn't prolonged or cumuaitive I perhaps it's not a problem.

But;  in the light of my quest for better focus, perhaps that same activity is the source of the problem. Nothing I've tried so far has done much. Deprenyl, @ 10mg. twice a day. Dextroamphetamine 10mg @ 5mg twice a day has done very much to help my focus and concentration.

*** ON the same episode of Peoples Pharmacy was a US educated neurologist with some interesting things to say about our life style and it's effects on health. A good part of the focus was on our gut biome and it's health, and how dis- ease in this area can lead to mood disorderd and adictive behavior. This begins with our standared american diet. Over time the biome's neighborhood gets invaded by bacteria that thrive in biomes that have become slums. This was discussed in detail as well as simple things to do to help our little helpers live in a more friendly neighborhood so to speak. The last thing most of us would hook up with a neurologist is Ayur Vedic health practices.  They came together during a long and unsuccessful bout with allopathic treatment protocols.  If any of this is of interest the show numeber is 1033. I may still be a free download.

I believe the text can still be accessed after the free download period expires. Part of her history is being active in 20, I think, clinical studies her field.

Yes, the widely used antihistamine diphenhydramine is also famously anticholinergic.  And as such is also anti-focus.  Occasional use is fine, but best not used on a daily basis or for an extended length of time.  At least some of the cognitively depressing effect of regular use may be cumulative, as The People's Pharmacy article suggests (http://www.peoplesph...k-for-dementia/).  For more detailed information, check the study that the article references:  http://archinte.jama...ticleid=2091745.
