Hi all,

So, my dad suffered a cardiac arrest 66 days ago. He is in a minimally conscious state at the moment.

Currently, in terms of supplements, he is only on 6.5g of EPA+DHA per day. He gets given atorvastatin, aspirin (75mg a day) and a small dose of dalteparin. I've bought something called Synchro Gold as I've been doing a lot of research into turmeric of late, and the Synchro Gold is a liquid extract that contains the following:

- 500mg organic turmeric root extract
- 6mg organic black pepper fruit extract
- organic ginger
- organic sunflower lecithin
- reverse osmosis-filtered water

I'm hoping to give him the recommended one ounce per day which could help with his neurological status. Any thoughts? I'm also concerned about interactions with the aspirin and dalteparin...

Not sure about the aspirin interactions, but I'm not a fan of overly filtered water as it can lead to mineral deficiencies.

These are just some leads.

20mg a day of methylcobalamin was shown in Japan to spur neurogenesis in Alzheimer's patients.

Then there are things like quercetin, wild blueberry extract, lion's mane and bacopa.

Pregnenolone in combination with something to preserve free T might also be a good lead.

Tough question - there are probably too many things to try - so many things can salvage brain cells. Need to select few that work superbly well, rather than many that work moderately well. This is problematic, as I know little about comparative studies about drugs for salvaging brain cells.

I do know that the following helps: (1) niacinamide; (2) niacin; (3) niacinamide riboside (4) phosphatidyl serine, and (5) d-serine. There are clinical studies and animal studies on (4) and (5). For niacinamide riboside, there are circumstantial evidence that it helps brain cells (e.g., in vitro experiments). Niacinamide is neuroprotective (it is well known), but I have not researched it recently - so you'd have to fill in the details.

Niacin is very interesting. Because people usually don't like its flushing effects, people don't consider using it. However, I think one can get acclimated to it - for example, I no longer get flushing from taking 250-500 mg. Niacin takes two pathways to contribute NAD to mitochondria, some of which should spill over into the brain through indirect salvage pathways.

Well L-Dopa is the first thing that comes to mind as far as raising dopamine. That's a precursor of dopamine from a supplement called Macuna Pruriens. Folate and maybe methylfolate (I think conversion of folate to methylfolate or the production of intermediaries is responsible for making alot of brain chemistry, but low methylfolate levels can cause alot of problems and elevating them comes with lots of benefits, plus it's much more well tolerated than folic acid with doses up to 15mg provided as a script (Deplin... they call it a medical food). It helps here to get genotyped by 23andme. Stacks well with 100mg of B2 and the 5-20mg of methylcobalamin (a specific form of B12). Glutamine is a neurotransmitter, it's available in supplements and bulk powder for cheap. I think Gaba is too. Mg Threonate would probably be of benefit as would Alpha GPC.

I think someone had also mentioned somewhere on the forum that C60 in olive oil might improve oxygen management or something to that effect? But I'm not recalling all that clearly. I'm thinking some sheep placenta extract will help too. MetaCurcumin is probably the best curcumin out there and is good for brain health.
