When I drink coffee, I feel motivated and I am very productive, but within an hour of having caffeine, I become weak in the arms and legs,  dizzy and very nauseous. I have to literally go lay down. What is the underlying cause? This is NOT a normal crash, I become physically ill. I don't get this when I drink decaf so I know it's the caffeine. But decaf doesn't motivate me.

sometimes guys can get a kind of morning sickness, it usually passes in 30-90minutes and is related to the cannabinoid system. so maybe caffeine is just making the feeling worse?

other possibilities include diabetes, malnourishment, hypokalemia (http://www.ncbi.nlm....les/PMC3046007/), and caffeine hypersensitivity/intolerance

It doesn't when i drink the coffee so definitely not morning sickness. Happens at night, afternoon (worst). I don't have diabetes, I eat well. Hypokalemia's got my attention. Let me go do some more research on that. thanks.

it tends to mean you're not getting enough potassoium, or its not absorbing properly. diuretics worsen it.

I went to the er on lsd, and they sent me home with potassium tablets. they also told me to eat dates and potatos, top fruit and veggie. apparently my potassium was dangerously low, I had eaten very little the previous 48 hours and was peeing out the little potassium I had.
I went in with nearly paralysed fingers and toes even though it was mid-summer (this was made worse by hyperventilation), and I also just felt really out of it, even for being stoned and tripping.

What about the cannabinoid system? Can you talk more about this?

5ht3, which is co-localized on cb1 neurons, induces hyperenemsis. some anti-nausea drugs, taken after surgery or by cancer patients, are 5ht3 antagonists.

5ht3, a postsynaptic receptor (only 5ht1d and sert are pre), has roughly the opposite action of cb1 (a presynaptic receptor which regulates, in this case, serotonin release). in these serotonin type 3 interneurons, cannabinoids have with 5ht a similar relationship, as gaba has to dopamine.

I discovered by accident that ginger, a 5ht3 antagonist, is not always enough to counteract the increased serotonin release which follows thc withdrawal. btw thc is coincidentally also a 5ht3 antagonist and this might contribute to its anti-nausea effect, as well as the GI disturbances seen in withdrawal states (5ht3 receptors are also densely enriched in the gut, this explains why ipecac syrup, a 5ht3 agonist, induces emesis far before having time to enter the bloodstream).

vulnerable individuals may exhibit non-classical reactions, as in the case of cannabinoid hyperenemsis syndrome, where medical cannabis begins to actually cause nausea. it is not clear the degree to which 5ht3 is responsible for such reactions.
