There has been some discussion before about hyaluronic acid possibly being dangerous.

Would this be the case for external use?

AFAIK and as research seems to indicate HA has nothing to do with cancer promotion, it has not to be confounded HA as one expression of some cancers and a possible role of HA in promoting cancer which are two very different things, of course.

Injected HA is cross linked which is a quite different animal which carries its own peculiar possible issues although very rare and are related to the cross linking, not with HA itself. .

About topical HA use the molecular weight will determine if it is going to go systemic or just permeate some more or less superficial layer of epidermis.

Up to 400KDa has been shown to be able to go systemic, above that is unlikely unless some permeant enhancer (like DMSO) is employed.

HA is quite good at vehiculate other compounds systemically therefore I would be concerned about its purity, especially if <400KDa since heavy metals content seems to be quite the norm.
