I'm in an interesting situation right now. I've been taking Doctor's Best Magnesium Bisglycinate lately, usually 100mg 3x daily. It has been significant for my mild and occasional anxiety/depression symptoms. After taking it for a few weeks I and noticing a very nice change and just about every day is a "good day". I feel much more sociable and creative regardless of the circumstance. My mood is almost always positive and a deficiency has most likely been corrected.

Now for the strange part. I have dealt with sleep issues for a few years now and my original goal was to find something that could help me sleep long term without tolerance build up like most things I've tried. This lead me to magnesium. My first night taking it, I slept very little and had what I would consider poor sleep but I still felt happy and positive the next day. After some experimenting I stopped taking it for a while and the effects on my mood vanished. So I got back on it and decided to only take it with meals instead of on an empty stomach and the results were better than before with much better sleep. I went about two weeks without one night of poor sleep and and for me that is completely unheard of.

This is all good news, however the past few nights have been very weak. Laying in bed for literally hours without falling asleep. Last night I went to bed around midnight and didn't fall asleep till after 6. There were no anxious or worried thoughts, just me laying there relaxed and not falling asleep. I woke around 9:30.

Despite all of this, I still feel pretty decent today and I'm still happy and confident, as the magnesium has been doing for me. Sleep deprivation used to hit me so much harder, especially when compounded over a few days.

Could it be the glycine? I've taken glycine for sleep in the past and I can't say it did much. I stopped taking it because it didn't seem to be helping my sleep like it has a reputation for doing. What other forms of magnesium should I try? I'm thinking malate possibly. I've taken citrate in the past and that just had me on the toilet, but glycinate doesn't do that to me.

Thanks for your interesting story. I am not an expert, but I think that the Malic Acid from the Magnesium Malate might be energizing. Worth a try if you need to change from the Bisglycinate though. There are a lot of other Magnesium forms. Maybe if you are sensitive to the amino acid chelated forms, then you could try Magnesium "oil" made from Magnesium Chloride flakes.

You could try glycine before sleep. Also, lavander oil applied topically helps.
