Several extracts in this study increased the lifespan, but many decreased it, even at smaller doses, especially ginseng/eleuthero type compounds, astragalus, rhodiola, also black pepper, chinese sage (check the supplemental figures). Surely there's no point risking these kind of extracts now: The effects may or may not be extended beyond yeast, but isn't there at least a risk?

Gladly these risks are very hypothetical. I, for one, couldn't replicate such experiments and afford bathtubs full with these plant-extracts, on top of it soak in it for days on end. Couldn't even do that with pristine water. Not to talk about that much ethanol from the extracts..

And humans are just like yeast! (Sarcasm)

It's a fun study that helps us theorize possible directions. However, you could also argue that garlic decreases lifespan because it poisons yeast cultures and does not have a hormetic response in yeast. This is absolute BS, of course, so the only thing this tells me is that yeast likes ginkgo and a few other herbs... Which would explain my tinea flaring up when on ginkgo... Or would it????

It's a fun study, meant to be inspirational for future studies, not that informative. Think of it as a food for curious thoughts. I think it worked, no?

Yes well it could be just "the herb is a yeast killer" of course. But drugs like spermidine, rapamycin, resveratrol, metformin, aspirin, (all extend yeast lifespan) it seems better being on that side of the equation (given all the obvious benefits of those).

RE: Interesting thoughts, the study perhaps hints that CR-mimetic herbs + CR may not be additive. The most potent herb was willow bark, then celery seed and Ginkgo Biloba, all three were much less effective on CR. Whereas the least potent herb on piggy diet, true passionflower, was effective with CR. Perhaps potent CR-mimetic + CR is just excessive.

Astragalus is one of my favorites herbs and I feel and look better when I'm taking it. Rhodiola is also an incredible herb in my experience. Even if they reduce lifespan in humans, and I don't think they do, they may still worth it because of the increase in life quality.

Anyway, you can always add White Willow Bark to compensate.
