I've been supplementing with magnesium for years, but apparently I wasn't taking nearly enough. When I began taking 2 (Doctor's Best chelated brand) pills every few hours just to see what would happen, a few hours later I began noticing massive changes physiologically and mentally.
 
Apparently a great deal of my issues trace back to low or insufficient levels of magnesium. I even went as far as getting blood results back (in 2013) that indicated my levels were low (1.7, versus 1.9-3.7), but the supplementation I embarked upon following wasn't nearly sufficient. That is, I'd take 400mg split daily, but it was apparently nowhere near what I needed. 
 
When I entered the many grams per day range (200mg every few hours), that's when the situation began to improve. I'm now going to try to get magnesium oil (or whatever version is absorbed through the skin) in order to increase the amount of magnesium I'm ingesting at any particular time. I'm hoping this will correct everything. It's also great, as I'll have a visual indicator (a white film lingering on the skin) to tell me that my body has enough magnesium and is therefore not absorbing anymore.
 
Has anyone else tried using magnesium in this way? What have been your experiences? Do these oils/sprays/flakes not actually work (not actually absorbed)? Anything else I'm missing?

I have read on this forum that the oils don't actually get absorbed due to molecular size, but others swear by them... Apparently there is no scientific testing either (nothing on pubmed).

Baccheion, consider also to measure the RBC magnesium (Red Blood Cell) as about 34% goes into those cells. 1% remains in the serum (I guess the one you are monitoring) and the rest 65% cannot be measured because goes in the bones (1). In my personal case serum is normal but RBC is low and I am trying to correct using a chelated form (bisglycinate).

Made the same experience. Increased steadily my elemental Mg intake to now 2.2 g/d to keep pain-full muscle-cramps away. Still, my serum levels already after commencing supplementation, came back in the upper half of the normal range. Since RBC wasn't available to me, got a whole blood Mg level, which came back very deficient at 31,8 mg/l (34 - 36 range). Despite increasing Mg intake whole blood and serum levels declined further.

 

What's your daily oral intake of elemental Magnesium now?

Did you try using magnesium oil/flakes? The transdermal spray on version seems to make a difference. Then you can get Magnesium L-Threonate (once body levels are built up) to target the brain?
 

I'm not sure how much I'm taking nowadays (I just started with this approach a few days ago), but I know I take two of the Doctor's Best chelated pills (100mg elemental Mg each) every few hours. I'm excited to get the magnesium oil (MgCl) spray later today, to begin topical application. After doing that for about 4 weeks, then I'll go back in for another blood test to see what my levels are like. The beauty about the topical version of the spray is that it begins leaving behind a film (Mg not being absorbed, so it collects on the skin) when the body has enough magnesium.

If you sleep 8 hours and take 100 mg elemental mg every 3 hours, that would be 533 mg per day only; every 2 hours 800 mg.
 

Didn't try Mg oil consistently. Let us know how it goes for you. However, again, only RBC or at least whole blood Mg levels are reliable. In my experience the kind of oral Mg doesn't makes as much a difference as the total elemental content. At least against muscle-cramps.

I believe I saw somewhere that magnesium taurate was helpful in treating OCD at high doses.

There are any things that help with OCD. I was just pointing out my experience with magnesium. The main elements of the stack I used:

 

10mg Memantine (+ 5mg at night as needed)

1.2g N-Acetyl Cysteine (2x / day)

3g Vitamin C

Have you tried following these instructions? See the video. Magnesium can be pretty cheap if you just make hydrogen water with it and kill two birds with one stone. I've been drinking it for about 13 days now. You get a solid dose of magnesium malate with each bottle in addition to molecular hydrogen.

 

I can't tell just yet how beneficial the hydrogen is yet, but for certain this is a very cheap way to get the amount of magnesium you're talking about and plenty of water at the very least.

I switched from magnesium maleate to magnesium bicarbonate water. Seems to do the same thing, though I do have to urinate more. I made it using magnesium hydroxide and some carbonated water. 15mL per minimum 300 mL. Leave a little air bubble at the tip of the container and shake it periodically until the white sediment disappears and the fluid is crystal clear.

Aqueous forms of magnesium tend to get absorbed better from what I understand. No crystals to muck up absorption.
