Hi everyone. Almost 3 weeks ago my grandmother of 66 suffered an ischemic stroke. There was no damage was detected in her CT scans and her carotid artery was apparently clear. Despite this, it caused a slight reduction of strength in her left side and minor numbness in her left toes. What is affecting her the most however, is the "post stroke fatigue". The fatigue began about 2 weeks after the stroke and is not constantly present; rather it comes in bouts throughout the day - which she describes as if her energy has been completely drained. As well as the fatigue, she's also been experiencing mild malaise.

Does anyone have any suggestions for speeding up her recovery from the post stroke fatigue? But most importantly, to at least give her the highest potential of recovering from it?

---

Her Pre-stroke regimen:

  • Magtein 1.3g daily.
  • Vitamin C 1g
  • Multivitamin & Minerals
  • 500mg EPA / 75mg DHA.
  • Vitamin D3 1000 units 6 days a week & 5000 units for the other.
  • MSM 3g daily
  • Vitamin B12 (methyl) 1000mcg
  • Estradiol patch 75mcg (no progesterone needed due to hysterectomy)
  • C60

 Post stroke:

  • Magtein, Vit C, D3, Multivitamin & Minerals, C60, MSM & B12, all continued.
  • Enalapril 2.5mg
  • Clopidogrel - can't remember the dosage. I want this changed to a 75mg Aspirin dose instead, because of the other benefits there are to taking it.
  • Atorvastatin 40mg - Her cholesterol wasn't elevated, so it infuriates me that this has been prescribed. Especially since mortality rates for women increase as cholesterol is decreased. She won't be taking this for more than a few weeks longer.
  • Estradiol patch has been stopped until her review at the stroke clinic in 2 weeks. Technically there shouldn't be a problem continuing it since as long as she takes an anticoagulant, the coagulating effects of estrogen will be mitigated.
  • Coenzyme Q 10 (Ubiquinone) 200mg daily.
  • Today, Bisoprolol 1.25mg was added into the mix by her GP because her BP was 160/90. (Any suggestions for correcting high BP? -- Other than being on two drugs to lower it..)

We will also work to improve her diet and ensure she gets regular exercise (she exercised regularly prior to the stroke anyway).

Do you see anything missing from her current regimen? Any help is highly appreciated!

I was thinking if it would be a good idea to add Piracetam to the mix, but I haven't looked into that in depth yet.
