NAC causing ocd?

It seems that NAC can both cause and remove the "ocd feeling," which is coincidentally the same feeling I get from taking tryptophan.

the tryptophan is expected to have the opposite effect when taken regularly. not sure if the NAC and glutamate have downstream serotonin effects or what's going on here, but maybe inositol could help

Strange. I took 3 grams of l-lysine and I got the glutamate feeling (ocd), and lysine can convert to glutamate (or not?). Became extremely irritated. I took NAC to reduce the glutamate but it seems to in some sense have exacerbated it. Could there be anything to it?

could be from increase of stimulating glutamate and maybe from how it affects immune system, since infections are often the root cause of OCD. i like to cycle nac anyway to keep natural gluthaione levels high and keep glutamate down

im not sure however i have been taking it regularly near daily for 2 years and days i take my 600-1200mg, my glutamate levels are significantly higher. making it harder to sleep sometimes for practically 15ish hrs, might be from gluthaione = cells dumping toxins into system too

Isn't NAC supposed to reduce glutamate if it's too high?

I think it actually modulates glutamte both ways.  So if I'm right, it's a very forgiving compound.  One existing problem maybe you're facing (that would complicate the situation) is of upstream or downstream effects, e.g. presynaptic NMDA (down) or dopamine receptors (up)

That's interesting (both of you). I do have a headache right now and it's unusually difficult to fall asleep even though I am tired. It rarely is like this and I haven't had any caffeine, and I am also sleep deprived as well. 

When my glutamate goes up I become very irritable like I want to throw my monitor or drill my nail into my skin until I bleed, and I also become repetitive in my actions.... This isn't the case right now (but I realize that there are multiple glutamate receptors).

 

It seems that this is one of those cases where people oversimplify a thing, labeling it as "anti-cancer" or "neuroprotective" when all it does is something that indirectly may effect some types of cancers. As you said, NAC can go both ways with glutamate.

I assume p5p (vitamin B6) is my best bet for reducing glutamate and glutamine levels but I'll have to wait for my order to arrive.

I wonder what a mix of l-lysine and p5p will do. I've already tried a mix of 1g glutamine and 25mg p5p and the gaba effects are quite subtle.

Good chance headache is because your body is loaded the fug up with toxins.

Another idea if NAC is causing problems of brainfog, is that maybe you have too much activity going on at mGluR5 (or not enough presynaptic mGluR5), which we normally want to inhibit.

I would like to start supplementing NAC for anxiety/OCD type disorder. I'm going to buy this particular supplement http://pl.iherb.com/...ggie-Caps/41653. It has selenium and molybdenum in its composition. I would like to take 2 capsules of it, so these two elements would exceed the their RDAs. Is it dangerous to use it in long term? I mean molybdenum and selenium not NAC. Sorry for my English.

Selenium is more toxic than other minerals if it's in too high quantities. With selenium you need to stay low around 300 micrograms if I remember right. The reason they added it is because it is contributing to the increase in glutathione. I assume it's the same with the other.

About that p5p which I thought would have anti-glutamate effects. It seems that by increasing serotonin activity, and one serotonin receptor is able to release glutamate, I end up with the same issue. That's sad but I'll still take it.

Nac increases histamine. It's also a sulfur compound. If you're sensitive to either of those, there is your problem.
