A few months ago I tried modafinil for the first time. I took (from what I remember) 2 - 3 pills each day for three days in a row, and on the third day and the days following I found some small red, circular spots on my skin, mainly on my neck and chest. They were quite small and unnoticable, and I only found them when I looked in the mirror. They weren't really itchy or anything, but seemed kind of like they could have been bug bites or something. They were not clustered, rather they were small individual circles spread out. I had some slight dryness and redness of skin as well, and my skin seemed very slightly irritable, but I did not get anything major I would call a 'rash'. I also didn't have any flu symptoms or anything like that, at all. Nevertheless, these spots were a big concern to me because of the seriousness of skin conditions around modafinil. Although the symptoms weren't drastic, the crazy possibilities combined I think with the somewhat obsessive state the drug put me in anyway made me become a bit manic thinking about these spots. They slowly went away after discontinuing.

I am basically wondering if anyone else has had these kinds of symptoms, skin irritations or small red spots when taking modafinil. Does this indicate a risk of SJS? Should I definitely rule out trying it again? I would definitely appreciate input on this, since all of the similar threads I have found seem to report different symptoms from mine.

Modafinil increases Histamine and allergic reactions.

try to reduce your dosage and adjust it on best one.

It doesn't sound like SJS, sounds more like Urticaria - which is a disease related to histamine, at least in part.

Can be induced by drugs that seemingly don't have ANYTHING to do with histamine - rather, it seems to be a kind of allergic reaction to either the compound or the additives to the medication in question.

Don't take my word for it though - have a look at this and decide for yourself if it's similar to what you experienced:

It should be noted, that if it really IS Urticaria, then you can block this peripheral effect completely, with LEVOcetirizine! : ) It's an antihistamine, but a lot more selective than older ones, supposedly doesn't cross the blood-brain-barrier at all - you would thereby ensure that you would preserve the positive effects of Modafinil, without Levocet interfering.

Thanks so much for this information - I've been searching for ages for what this could be, and that seems right. I'll look into ordering that antihist, but do you think this allergic response is increasingly dangerous with continued use of moda? Or are the symptoms likely to stay stable on a reasonable lower dose? None of the issues are very big at all, it's more the paranoia of finding little red spots randomly on my skin, not knowing if it could flare up badly at any moment. I'd be interested how many other people have subtle skin abnormalities on moda that don't turn out to anything dramatic, or if this is a red flag that means to discontinue immediately.

Eyy, you're welcome dude! = ) We're all here to get better - helping out is good for the soul.

I had skin-abnormalities while on Moda' as well - strange, big, dark purplish red, sore, not quite swollen, marks on the end of my thighs, close to the groin - one on each thigh.

Apparently that's close to some glands, which is one of several different rashes which Modafinil induce.

Rather curious though, because it's supposedly fairly selective for the brain, crosses the barrier and all, yet it still causes these peripheral effects...

The reason I mention it being strange is because I HAVE already allergies and exema - allergy-induced asthma even - yet I felt NOTHING on those symptoms while on Modafinil - it induced entirely NEW allergic reaction, which I had never felt before, nor sense.

Those symptoms went away with a rechallenge and some regular cetirizine as well. That's a common, viable tactic with Lamotrigine btw - causes urticaria as well - AND SJS - but quitting the drug and then starting it up again at a lower dose, and then gradually increasing, removes the problem - some kind of desensitisation or what-have-you.

SO... try Modafinil again, but at a lower dose - AND, add Levocetirizine - should clear up all of the problems in no-time! = )
