Hello all,

First I'd like to thank everyone for their contributions to the forum, they have been life-changing for me.

I took ALCAR for roughly a year but had to stop as the anxiety was too much to bear, and in lower doses it seemed to stimulate nerve pain. I switched to regular L Carnitine (Tartrate) and still have some anxiety/negative thinking though it's massively reduced.

I'm curious about L Carnitine's effect on the brain. Is it a cholinergic like ALCAR? That, while energizing me and improving memory, caused me depressive and OCD-like thoughts. I'm still having those now to a much lesser degree, and I can't tell if it's the carnitine, or just plain stress/anxiety/lasting negative thought patterns that will eventually dissipate (I have had enormous stress at work recently as well). I don't really want to take a break from L Carnitine because it helps me a lot with body fat/body comp.

Thanks!

Good. Subtle decreases in recovery time, improved digestion of fatty foods, etc.

Anyone have an answer regarding my original question?

You should try this product arginocarn, it's acetyl-carnitine arginate

It's supposed to increase neurite growth 3 times as much as regular alcar or something

Try it as a nootropic and tell us what you experience

L-carnitine is not cholinergic.  They are not the same molecule.  L-carnitine provides the benefits of carnitine without the complications of acetylcholine.

DO NOT put all your chips on the advertisements of supplement companies and the idiots that listen to them.  ALCAR (acetylcarnitine) and l-carnitine are not equivalent.

Arginocarn will not help you either.  It still has the acetyl group which is donated to synth acetylcholine.

There is no reason for l-carnitine by itself to have those kinds of effects on you, unless perhaps you are taking very large doses of it.

L-carnitine assists your mitochondrial functioning in general - your whole body.   It's not particularly brain-specific like ALCAR is.  This doesn't mean it has no effect on brain function at all - like I said, it's for your whole body in general

However, you say that you've been taking ALCAR for a year and have been experiencing this anxiety for a long time as a result of it.  You have to understand how sustained anxiety and depression actually alter the brain's neural pathways in certain ways, regardless of the ultimate cause of the anxiety -- even if you've stopped taking ALCAR, your brain is still wired to be readily-anxious and it's going to take a while to undo it, for those pathways to calm down (in colloquial terms), especially if your life is already stressful.  But it can be done, in time.
