Religion gave birth to the Sciences and values life. However we realize everything only physical dies is a scientific statement with overwhelming evidence.
Actually philosophy gave birth to the sciences. Empirical science is literally the direct descendant of natural philosophy; the stuff of Socrates and Aristotle. Not Plato, though, he was overly focused on the internal. To this day, the scientific method remains firmly rooted in philosophy, and is antithetical to religious approaches to the world.
Philosophy in general arose because the people were unsatisfied with religion's hollow answers.
Religion was humanity's first attempt at philosophy and science. That's why it sucks. It was the first try. But now we have something better.
