Fasting and the Liver

Some blogs out there will tell you that fasting is to give the liver a break, but isn't it involved in converting fat back to sugar in the absence of food sources? Does the liver ever really get a "break"? I assume it's like the heart, you definitely don't wanna give your heart a break from pumping.
