Inositol (one gram, an hour before I want to go to bed) sends me to sleep rather well.  Doesn't cause drowsiness, but clears those pesky thought loops that tend to swirl around in your head and keep you awake.  Very popular for OCD, but crosses over well into tranquility inducing med.  

 

Low dose Mag-Citrate / 200mg (again, an hour before bed) relaxes muscles and helps relax the body too.

Interesting, I think I will try it. What powder do you recommend? I already take Magnesium Glycinate.

Regular Myo-Inositol aka Vitamin B-8 is what I use for sleep.  One gram usually does the trick.  

 

I take low dose Inositol Hexaphosphate too (for other reasons), but this doesn't tranquilize my mind like the B-8 Inositol does.  

 

I reckon Mag-Glycinate should work as well as Mag-Citrate.  I just like the Mag-Citrate because it's easiest on my tum.

Thought I was the only one this helped with sleep.  I probably used it alone at some point decades ago (don't remember).  At the moment I take 500 mg inositol + 1 mg melatonin.  If I have a lot of trouble sleeping I'll take 1 mg melatonin + 1gram inositol and be a little groggy 8 hours later.  I thought that the melatonin was better at helping me fall asleep and the inositol better at helping me stay asleep, but I could easily be wrong.

Oh, glad you brought up the melatonin Benko.  Another good alternative to anti-col's.  I've never tried it, but know several folks who swear by it, including a doctor I work with.  

 

I've read some are spooked about taking a hormone...  That daily supplementation might cause the pineal gland to stop producing this.  Haven't a clue whether this is a valid concern, but something I'd do my homework on before I took this routinely.  

 

I'd still rather take melatonin than an anti-col if inositol wasn't effective, or quit working for me.

Valerian is a decent sleep aid.  Probably don't want to use it every night for an extended period.

Valerian is a mild gabaergic, though that is not it's only method of action.  If you used it in high enough doses for long enough you might develop some tolerance.
